Monkey D. Luffy, the main character of the long-running manga and anime One Piece, has grown a lot since his introduction. He began as a comical hero whose impressive strength matched his playful nature, and many viewers didn’t anticipate how complex he would become. After a significant time jump in the story, One Piece began hinting at a larger destiny for Luffy. The truth was fully revealed during the Wano arc’s finale when his Gear 5 transformation showed him to be a legendary Sun God, confirming he was always special. This established Luffy as a character operating on a completely different level within the anime world.
Since introducing Luffy’s incredible power, One Piece has increasingly shown him as a godlike character. The newest artwork released for his birthday, May 5th, perfectly captures this. Posted by the official One Piece X account, the illustration depicts Luffy in his Gear 5 form, inspired by his epic battle with Kaido and the immense energy he unleashed. This new artwork takes that divine impression even further with small details, solidifying the idea that One Piece is portraying Luffy as a truly godlike being.
One Piece Celebrates Monkey D. Luffy’s Birthday With the Perfect Godlike Illustration

This artwork depicts Monkey D. Luffy standing out against a starry, black backdrop, giving him a powerful, almost god-like presence. While the Thousand Sunny and Kozuki Momonosuke (in dragon form) are also present, Luffy dominates the image, highlighting his status as the ‘Sun God’ and alluding to the energy he generates by pushing his heart to its limits. Although the origins of his Gear 5 form and its connection to the Sun God remain a mystery, the series is clearly establishing Gear 5 as Luffy’s signature look and positioning him as a leading figure in the anime and manga world.
Luffy’s Gear 5 form is a fantastic fit for his personality. It captures his playful, liberating spirit – exactly what the creator, Eiichiro Oda, envisioned. The form feels limitless, mirroring how Gear 5 lets Luffy essentially bring his imagination to life. It will be interesting to see how One Piece develops the connection between Luffy, the Sun God, and Joyboy through this form. Hopefully, the series will continue to showcase Luffy’s inspiring and joyful nature, rather than changing him completely. Right now, though, Luffy has never seemed more impressive and endearing, as seen in the recent birthday illustration for One Piece.
