Growing up in the 1970s often meant waking up early on Saturdays, enjoying a bowl of cereal, and settling in to watch cartoons like Scooby-Doo, Fat Albert, and Super Friends – it was a weekend tradition for many. While those classic Saturday morning cartoon blocks are largely a thing of the past, streaming services now make it possible to re-watch those favorites. And this May, one beloved cartoon from that era returned to streaming, available to watch for free.
Starting May 1st, you can now stream all 16 episodes of the 1973 Addams Family cartoon exclusively on Tubi. This Hanna-Barbera series put a unique spin on the classic spooky family, following them on the road in an RV, and was originally shown on NBC’s Saturday morning cartoons. It’s been hard to find online until now! Tubi is becoming a great place for fans of the early Addams Family. The streamer already had all 64 episodes of the original 1964-1966 series that aired on ABC, plus the 1977 The Addams Family: Halloween Special, which brought the original cast back together as they prepare for Halloween – and unknowingly host a pair of robbers!
The Addams Family Animated Show Successfully Brought the Characters Back to TV
If you love The Addams Family, you won’t want to miss the animated series this May! Originally appearing in The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries in 1972, the show successfully revived the beloved characters for television, keeping their signature spooky vibe while also making some updates. The series shifted from live-action to animation, mirroring the style of Charles Addams’ original New Yorker drawings, and expanded the family’s adventures with a fun, cross-country road trip—ideal for a Saturday morning cartoon. The show also brought back original cast members Jackie Coogan as Uncle Fester and Ted Cassidy as Lurch, and introduced new voices, including a young Jodie Foster as Pugsley.
As a big movie fan, I always thought the Addams Family was perfect for animation, and the original series really proved that. It took a while, but Hanna-Barbera finally brought them to life in a ’90s cartoon after the live-action movie hit it big in ’91. And just recently, we’ve seen them back on the big screen with the animated films from 2019 and 2021 – it’s great to see this spooky family still going strong!
Other Animated Titles Now on Tubi
Tubi is adding a bunch of new free movies and TV shows in May, including favorites like The Addams Family. Fans of classic cartoons can now stream shows like Cow and Chicken, Evil Con Carne, and Static Shock. On the movie side, Tubi now has animated films like Flushed Away, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Rio 2, Rugrats in Paris: The Movie, and The Angry Birds Movie.
