Netflix’s 2-Part Thriller Series With A Star-Studded Cast & 92% RT Score Takes A Massive Hit

After a long wait, one of Netflix’s most popular thriller series returned with new episodes in 2026. While the new season is captivating, the show is facing a problem that needs to be resolved quickly. Netflix generally offers a good mix of shows that tell complete stories in one season and those that continue for multiple seasons.

Netflix boasts many excellent shows, including hits like Stranger Things, Adolescence, Mindhunter, and The Queen’s Gambit. It’s not surprising that longer, multi-season shows stay popular for a greater amount of time. Recently, in 2026, one of these shows returned with a new season, continuing a common pattern.

It’s become increasingly common for shows initially created as single seasons to be extended due to popularity. Many of these have gone on to become excellent anthology series, telling completely new stories with different characters and settings each season. A prime example is HBO’s The White Lotus, which maintains a central murder mystery theme set in a luxurious hotel, but otherwise reinvents itself with each new installment.

As a big fan of compelling TV, I was really excited when season 2 of Netflix’s Beef dropped on April 16th. It’s been about three years since the show first came out on April 6, 2023, and I loved the idea of them turning it into an anthology series, similar to The White Lotus. That means a whole new cast and story! But, unfortunately, it seems like the new season is facing some problems.

Beef Season 2’s Global Hit Status Is In Question

Netflix’s first season of Beef quietly became a huge success. While it started slowly, the thriller series eventually became a ‘sleeper hit,’ remaining in the Global Top 10 on Netflix for an impressive five weeks straight, as reported by What’s on Netflix. This demonstrates how Beef resonated with and captivated audiences worldwide.

The second season of Beef started off like the first, initially ranking 9th on Netflix’s worldwide charts, as reported by FlixPatrol. But its time there was brief. After premiering on April 16th, the show quickly fell off the Top 10 list, leaving the charts entirely by April 28th.

After just one week on Netflix’s global charts, season 2 of Beef performed significantly lower than its first season, appearing four fewer weeks on the charts. According to Netflix’s Tudum rankings, the show experienced a substantial 58% drop in viewership between seasons. Season 1 drew 5.8 million views in its first week, while season 2 only reached 2.4 million. These numbers suggest the show’s future with Netflix is uncertain.

Beef Season 2 Needs To Fight Back To Ensure The Netflix Series’ Future

Netflix is known for canceling shows that don’t attract many viewers, so season 2 of Beef needs to boost its ratings and climb back onto Netflix’s global charts if it hopes to get renewed for a third season. The show made a significant change by becoming an anthology series, and it’s added impressive actors like Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Charles Melton, and Cailee Spaeny to its cast.

If the new season of a show with a famous cast and a compelling story doesn’t perform well on Netflix, it could be canceled. We recently saw this happen with The Night Agent, which was once one of Netflix’s most popular shows but lost viewers with its later seasons and won’t return for a fifth season. Beef experienced a similar drop in viewership, so if season two doesn’t attract enough viewers, it’s likely the show will also be canceled.
