Twenty-seven years ago, Star Wars first showed us a young Anakin Skywalker. While we knew his story would ultimately end tragically – that the boy born into slavery on Tatooine would become a powerful Sith Lord – the details of his path were a mystery. In The Phantom Menace, Yoda hinted at the process of falling to the dark side, explaining that it begins with fear, then anger, hate, and ultimately, suffering.
Anakin Skywalker was a classic example of a promising Jedi with a troubled path, and now, after the first season of Maul – Shadow Lord, Padawan Devon Izara seems to be following a similar trajectory. Just like George Lucas intended with Star Wars – where themes and characters echo each other – Devon shares many of Anakin’s traits, possesses incredible potential, and appears destined for a comparable journey.
Devon Izara Has Become the New Anakin Skywalker

Devon Izara is a Twi’lek Jedi Padawan who battled in the Clone Wars. She and her master, Eeko-Dio Daki, managed to escape the devastating Order 66 and are now hiding from the Empire. However, Devon has caught the attention of Darth Maul, who sees her as a promising apprentice. The story, Maul – Shadow Lord, focuses on Devon’s journey towards the dark side, a fate many readers predicted. Interestingly, the dynamic between Devon and Master Daki closely mirrors the relationship between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker.
The excitement was particularly strong in episodes 7 and 8 of Maul – Shadow Lord, when Master Daki tasked Devon with arranging transportation for a prison escape. She chose a speeder that Anakin Skywalker would have loved – she arrived with confidence and clearly enjoyed its incredible acceleration, especially as a way to evade the Empire. Master Daki’s exasperated response mirrored Obi-Wan Kenobi’s frustration with Anakin’s love of speed and thrills.
The speeder chase between Anakin and Devon was incredibly exciting – truly one of the best in all of Star Wars. But beyond the action, Devon’s story is starting to mirror Anakin Skywalker’s. It’s no surprise that the trauma of Order 66 has left her afraid. Ultimately, her strong bond with Master Daki led to her downfall. By the end of Maul – Shadow Lord, Devon gave in to her anger and hatred, turning away from the Jedi path and choosing to learn from Maul instead.
Maul – Shadow Lord Season 2 Is Taking Shape

It’s easy to overlook, but the show Maul – Shadow Lord is already laying the groundwork for Devon’s descent into darkness. This season, she formed a strong connection with Rylee Lawson, and they both went to great lengths to protect each other. Now, both Rylee and Devon are struggling with grief over the loss of a father figure, and viewers suspected a romantic connection between them even before this. It looks like we’re on track for another Star Wars love story.
In Star Wars stories, Sith Lords traditionally prove their dedication to the dark side by killing someone they love. In The Force Awakens, Supreme Leader Snoke attempted to make Kylo Ren do this, but it failed because Han Solo willingly sacrificed himself. Emperor Palpatine probably intended Padmé Amidala to be Anakin Skywalker’s sacrifice, but Anakin’s reaction wasn’t what Palpatine expected. Instead of deliberately killing her, Anakin lashed out in anger, and later spent years trying to bring her back to life.
It’s doubtful Maul sees Devon as a true Sith apprentice. However, he’ll probably teach him the same way he always has, because it’s the only method he knows. If that’s true, he might even want Devon to get close to Rylee, intending for him to become her sacrifice. This situation is starting to resemble Anakin Skywalker’s path in Revenge of the Sith, though it remains to be seen how far Devon will go down this road.
Devon Izara’s Future May Be As Certain As Anakin’s

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m getting a really strong Anakin Skywalker vibe from Devon Izara – it feels like her path is already set. It’s so obvious she’s based on Darth Talon, that awesome red-skinned Twi’lek Sith from the old Expanded Universe. Remember how George Lucas originally planned her as Maul’s apprentice? The season finale of Maul – Shadow Lord really hammered that home, bathing her in red light as she fully embraced the dark side. It wasn’t just a cool visual nod to Sith lightsabers, it felt like brilliant foreshadowing of what’s to come!
The story of Darth Maul continues in Maul – Shadow Lord, though it takes place at a different point in the Star Wars saga. This new direction is clever, as it highlights the key differences between Maul and Darth Vader: Vader became a powerful leader within the Empire, while Maul was always just a weapon used by Palpatine. In the story, Maul and his allies attempt to fight darkness with more darkness, a strategy that’s destined to fail. The story emphasizes that only the light side of the Force can truly overcome evil.
Will Devon finish her training and become Darth Talon, or simply Talon if Maul abandons the ‘Darth’ title? It’s also possible she’ll reject the dark side and choose Rylee instead of Maul. This makes the second season of Maul – Shadow Lord especially thrilling, as it opens up many exciting directions for the show’s future.
