Sam Smith Reveals Met Gala 2026 Outfit Weighed 52 Pounds

Sam Smithjust revealed the unholy size of their 2026 Met Gala look.

Though their mermaid dress, created by Christian Cowan, featured wing-like sleeves, the outfit was surprisingly substantial and not light at all.

Sam Smith told Emma Chamberlain of Vogue that the outfit weighed 52 pounds, joking it was “the heaviest thing I’ve ever worn” and felt like a serious workout.

Despite appearing restrictive, the 33-year-old artist found the heavy fabric surprisingly energizing, describing it as a supportive structure for their shoulders. They didn’t choose to wear the elaborate gown themselves—their partner of almost four years suggested it.

Christian explained to Vogue that Sam had asked for a lighter design, but he didn’t fulfill the request. He jokingly apologized, adding that the final look was inspired by the lavish style of the 1920s.

Following the event’s “Fashion is Art” theme, Sam’s dress – complete with a fluffy collar and feather headdress – was inspired by the iconic Art Deco illustrator Erté. Christian, meanwhile, complemented Sam’s look at the “Costume Art” event with a sleek, all-black textured suit.

I was absolutely floored when I learned how many beads went into creating Sam’s incredible dress! The designer shared that it took a whopping 255,000 beads to achieve that stunning embroidered look. It really puts the craftsmanship into perspective, doesn’t it?

Even though the dress was heavy, the singer of “Dancing With a Stranger,” who has been with Christian since 2022, said she wouldn’t have wanted anyone else to help her create the outfit.

They were thrilled, saying this person truly understands their body. It’s their third Met Gala together, and they love collaborating and creating a shared vision as a couple.

Sam turned to their partner and said, “I’m so happy to be with you and share in your amazing abilities.”
