Sony Ships 93.7 Million PS5 Consoles, But Recent Sales Down by Almost 50%

Sony announced today that they’ve now sold 93.7 million PlayStation 5 consoles. Sales for the last three months of the fiscal year (January to March 2026) totaled 1.5 million units, though this is a significant decrease compared to the same period last year.

PlayStation 5 shipments totaled 2.8 million units in the last three months of 2024, a nearly 50% drop compared to the same period a year earlier. For the entire year of 2025, 16 million PS5 consoles were shipped, which is a small decrease from the 18.5 million units shipped in 2024.

Sony’s PlayStation 5 is now past its initial popularity surge, so a decrease in sales isn’t surprising. In the past, Sony boosted sales by lowering prices on their consoles, making them more affordable for families. But this time around, the PS5 is actually becoming more expensive.

The price of the PS5 recently went up, but this happened after the last quarter of the fiscal year ended. Therefore, the recent drop in sales wasn’t caused by the price increase. In fact, the announcement of the price hike likely increased sales temporarily, as people hurried to buy a PS5 or PS5 Pro before the new prices took effect.

Just before Sony raised the price of the PS5 Pro by $150, we noticed it quickly sold out at several stores.

Sony anticipates that their PlayStation 5 hardware sales in 2026 will depend on how much memory they can acquire at affordable costs. They also predict that profitability for the hardware will be similar to what they achieved in 2025.

In the last three months, players bought 74.6 million PlayStation games for both PS5 and PS4, including 5.8 million exclusive titles made by PlayStation. Currently, the majority – 85% – of PlayStation owners are choosing to download games instead of buying physical copies.

PlayStation Network currently has 125 million active users, up one million from this time last year.
