In January 2023, Peter Safran and James Gunn officially introduced the DCU, outlining a series of films and shows for its first chapter. We’ve already seen some of these projects, including last year’s Superman movie, Creature Commandos, and season two of Peacemaker. This year, we’ll get even more, with Lanterns and Supergirl arriving later in the summer. While some projects, like The Authority, seem to be on hold, the DCU is definitely moving forward.
A standout characteristic of the new DC Universe led by James Gunn and Peter Safran is their flexibility. They’re willing to change course and embrace new ideas, even if they weren’t part of the initial plan. For example, the upcoming Clayface movie wasn’t previously announced, but gained momentum after writer Mike Flanagan presented a compelling vision for it. Similarly, a potential Deathstroke & Bane movie has been quietly developing, and recent reports suggest director Greg Mottola is now the leading candidate to helm the project.
DC’s Deathstroke & Bane Movie Circling a Surprising Director
Deadline reports that Evan Mottola, known for directing films like Adventureland and Superbad, is a leading candidate to direct the upcoming movie. However, he’s not the only director being considered, and the project is still in its early stages – the script isn’t finished yet. Matthew Orton (Moon Knight, Cleaner) is writing the screenplay. While Mottola is known for comedy, he’s also directed episodes of Peacemaker, which means he already has experience within the DC Universe.
The movie often referred to in the press as a “Deathstroke & Bane” film hasn’t been officially confirmed by DC. While James Gunn previously mentioned a script by Gavin Orton that was similar to a Deathstroke/Bane story, DC hasn’t confirmed that’s what the movie will be about. Gunn has emphasized that DC Studios won’t approve any project without a strong, finished script, meaning this particular movie may not actually happen.
The plot of the upcoming film is still a mystery, especially since Deathstroke and Bane haven’t often teamed up in DC Comics. It’s a challenge to create a movie with these two villains without including Batman, considering their shared history as his rivals. While Batman has briefly appeared in the DC Universe through Creature Commandos, his major film debut is expected in The Brave and the Bold. If this Deathstroke and Bane movie comes out before that one, it could either frustrate fans who are waiting for Batman or actually increase excitement for his eventual appearance.
Both Bane and Deathstroke have been in movies before, but the adaptations haven’t always been true to the comic books, and they haven’t had much screen time. Bane was previously portrayed in Batman & Robin as a very different character from the comics, but Tom Hardy’s version in The Dark Knight Rises was a much better fit, even including his iconic moment of breaking Batman’s back. Deathstroke has had even less time on screen – he only appeared briefly in a post-credit scene in the original Justice League movie, with Joe Manganiello playing the mercenary. He had a slightly expanded role in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
