A reliable source familiar with the Halo franchise has shared some early information about the next main Halo game. Although the developers, Halo Studios, are currently finishing up the remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved, titled Halo: Campaign Evolved, they are also planning a new installment in the core Halo series. While it could be a while before we see an official announcement, we’re starting to get a glimpse of what Halo Studios might be developing.
YouTuber Rebs Gaming recently shared details from former Halo director Joseph Staten’s plans for the next Halo campaign. Staten, who left 343 Industries in 2023, had proposed a project called “Campaign Next,” which would have expanded the story of the Endless – a new alien race introduced in Halo Infinite. Unfortunately, this meant putting plans to bring back the Flood – a fan-favorite enemy from Halo’s history – on hold.
Although Staten is no longer with Halo Studios, plans he previously developed might still be used in the future. Rebs Gaming noticed a job posting for a Narrative Design Director at Halo Studios that repeatedly mentions “Halo Next.” While this isn’t exactly the same as Staten’s earlier “Campaign Next” concept, the similar phrasing suggests the sequel to Halo Infinite, currently in development, could incorporate some of his original ideas.
No matter what direction Halo Studios takes with future Halo games, a direct sequel to Infinite is likely a long way off. Halo Studios is still hiring for a new campaign project, and reports suggest they’re also working on remakes of Halo 2 and Halo 3, following the remake of Halo: Combat Evolved. We might get a better look at these remakes at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7th, if the reports are accurate.
The new game, Halo: Campaign Evolved, is expected to release this summer on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PlayStation 5 – marking its debut on the PS5 platform.
