seasons 2 and 3 may not feature one actor from season 1.
The sci-fi series 3 Body Problem, created by David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo, premiered on Netflix in 2024, based on the novel by Liu Cixin. Netflix has announced that the show will return for a second season, and plans to conclude the story with a third.
CCH Pounder, who played Secretary General Lillian Joseph in the first season of 3 Body Problem, doesn’t expect to return for the remaining seasons. In an interview with ScreenRant, she explained that the show’s writers haven’t figured out a way to include her character, especially given the series’ increasingly complex timeline. Here’s what she had to say:
Honestly, it seems like they’re unsure how to handle the situation. It’s taking so long that whoever is in charge will likely be replaced before anything is resolved. At the current rate, it feels like someone from a future generation will be dealing with it – almost as if my distant descendants will be involved.
Joseph, the Secretary General, doesn’t have a large part in the first season of 3 Body Problem, which centers on scientists facing a future alien invasion. Actress Eke Chukwu’s statement implies the character won’t return, and this aligns with how long it took to film the season.
Filming for the second season of 3 Body Problem started in Budapest, Hungary in July 2025 and finished in March of this year, according to cinematographer Catherine Goldschmidt’s Instagram post. Actress Jess Pounder reportedly wasn’t involved in the season’s production, or is intentionally downplaying her role.
There’s still a possibility that actress Lorraine Toussaint, who plays Secretary General Joseph, could appear in the third season. Although filming is scheduled to begin in June, the scripts aren’t completely finished, which leaves room for her character. If the season takes nine months to film, like the previous one, she might return.
However, Cixin Liu’s stories hint that bringing this character back wouldn’t really fit the plot. Joseph isn’t part of the original books, and the story covers centuries – far longer than any single person could live.
The books use cryogenic freezing to let some characters travel into the future, but as the story goes on, new characters take center stage. Because of this, the actors we see in season 1 of the 3 Body Problem might be very different from those in season 3, depending on how the showrunners adapt the source material.
Season 2 of 3 Body Problem is coming to Netflix later this year, but there’s no news yet about when Season 3 might arrive. Although the show still has many unanswered questions for its final two seasons, it seems unlikely we’ll see more of General Secretary Pounder in future episodes.
