Comic book movies are often associated with superheroes, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has definitely made them a dominant force in entertainment, producing many of the highest-grossing films of the past two decades. However, superhero stories aren’t the only comics adapted for film. Horror comics have also been successfully turned into movies, creating some classic and frightening experiences for audiences. Currently, one of these horror adaptations is available to watch for free on Pluto TV this month.
The 2007 movie 30 Days of Night is based on the horror comic book of the same name by Steven Niles. Starring Josh Hartnett and Melissa George, the film tells the story of a small Alaskan town attacked by vampires during its month-long period of complete darkness. The movie was successful in theaters and led to a franchise, including two TV miniseries and a sequel called Dark Days.
30 Days of Night is An Underrated Vampire Gem

When people think of great vampire movies, titles like Let the Right One In, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and Nosferatu often come up. But 30 Days of Night deserves to be mentioned alongside them. It offers a unique take on vampires. Though it keeps some classic elements—like drinking blood and being active at night—the vampires in this film aren’t the traditional, gothic immortals. They’re much more like the zombies from The Walking Dead: wild, brutal, and terrifyingly violent. While they are more calculating and organized than zombies—they’re intelligent, and their leader, Marlow, is genuinely frightening—that actually makes them even scarier.
What makes 30 Days of Night so effective as a horror movie – and a vampire film – is its raw, relentless intensity. It’s a refreshing change of pace because the movie doesn’t try to make its vampires sympathetic, something we often see in the genre. It’s a straightforward battle between good and evil with incredibly high stakes. This unique approach sets it apart from typical vampire movies and helps it deliver scares that many comic book-based horror films miss. Don’t miss it on Pluto TV this month! And as a bonus, the sequel, 30 Days of Night: Dark Days, is also available to stream for free.
