New Pokemon Report Is Good News for Future Nintendo Switch Ports of Retro Games

Fans were excited earlier this year when Nintendo Switch received updated versions of the classic 2004 games, Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. It was a bit unusual that these weren’t released as part of the Nintendo Switch Online service, but players still eagerly returned to the Kanto region. Since then, people have been hoping to see other older Pokemon games come to current consoles. Now, a recent report from Nintendo suggests that more retro titles are likely on their way.

Everyone was excited for Pokemon Pokopia, so Nintendo releasing Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen on Switch felt like a surprising move. Since its launch, Pokopia has become one of the year’s most popular and highly-rated games. However, Nintendo’s recent financial report shows they made a smart decision with the retro release. FireRed and LeafGreen sold almost as well as Pokemon Pokopia – which is great news for fans!

Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreenā€˜s Success Paves the Way for More Switch Ports

Nintendo’s recent financial report shows that Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen have sold over 4 million copies worldwide in just six weeks. That’s a remarkable achievement for games originally released 22 years ago! These retro versions are almost as popular as Pokemon Pokopia, which sold over 4 million units in its first five weeks. While Pokopia is only available on the Switch 2, limiting its potential sales, the fact that both games performed so well around the same time is really noteworthy.

As a huge PokĆ©mon fan, I’m really excited to see how well FireRed and LeafGreen are doing! While they haven’t sold as many copies as the originals did back in the day, 4 million is still a fantastic start, especially since they’re only available digitally. It seems like The PokĆ©mon Company is probably pretty happy with these numbers, and honestly, it gives me hope that we’ll see even more classic PokĆ©mon games come to the Switch down the road. It feels like this could be the start of something big for retro PokĆ©mon fans like me!

Currently, Nintendo hasn’t announced plans to bring other classic PokĆ©mon games to the Switch. However, many fans are eager to play titles like HeartGold and SoulSilver on the console. Strong sales of the recent remakes make that possibility much more likely. Given the long wait until the release of PokĆ©mon Winds and Waves, fans are hoping these older games will become available on Switch soon.

Considering how well the remakes of the original Red and Blue did, HeartGold and SoulSilver seem like the logical next choice for a retro release on Switch. While the U.S. release anniversary has passed, the Japanese release date of September 12th offers another possible window for Nintendo to announce the new ports. With not much else planned for PokƩmon in 2026, releasing them then would make a lot of sense.

Because FireRed and LeafGreen included a visit to the Johto region as part of the game, some players are predicting that remakes of the Hoenn region games will be next. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire were originally released in November 2014, making now a logical time for new versions. PokƩmon fans generally expect a new game release in the fall, and currently, there are no announced games scheduled for fall 2026.

Currently, Nintendo hasn’t announced any plans to bring more classic PokĆ©mon games to the Switch. However, recent sales numbers suggest there’s strong interest in older titles, which is a good sign for potential future re-releases.
