The journey to bringing the much-awaited “Coyote vs Acme” to cinemas took a significant stride forward on July 26th, as the comedy graced San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H as the opening panel. Initially produced by Warner Bros. and filmed in 2020, this movie has been gathering dust for years, seemingly destined for obscurity as Warner Bros. Discovery initially decided not to release it, instead opting to claim the costs as a tax deduction (similar to the canceled “Batgirl” DCEU film). However, fan pressure led to its revival, and today’s Comic-Con panel marked the first time footage from the movie was shown to the public, along with announcing its worldwide release date.
The session commenced with a segment showing Wile E. Coyote seated in his workshop, intently scrutinizing blueprints for his Acme inventions as Johnny Cash’s rendition of “Hurt” plays softly. A series of flashbacks unfolds, depicting numerous unsuccessful attempts by Wile E. to catch the Road Runner and the injuries he sustained due to malfunctioning Acme gadgets. As the song intensifies, it alternates between vintage footage of Wile E. and contemporary scenes from the movie, until a television commercial intrudes upon the music and his contemplations. On the screen appears Will Forte’s character Kevin Avery, an attorney from the firm Avery, Jones, and Maltese, who initiates his advertisement by posing some queries:
Have you ever tried to deploy your parachute and found it was a fork instead? Or perhaps, you intended to explode some dynamite, but it backfired? Don’t worry, it wasn’t your mistake – there’s another party responsible.
Just as the last words echo in Wile E. Coyote’s head, his workshop lights flicker on, revealing an abundance of Acme crates that fill the space around him.
Following this short snippet, we were given a six-minute excerpt from “Coyote vs Acme“. In the segment, the trial was about to commence and Will Forte’s character showed signs of terror. The director shared with us that Avery is more of a lawyer who seeks settlements rather than going to trial, hence he hadn’t been in a courtroom for years. Sitting next to him was Wile E. Coyote, while on the opposite side, representing Acme, was John Cena as Buddy Crane.
At the start of the trial, the judge (portrayed by Luis Guzman) steps into the courtroom. Given that this trial involves both humans and cartoons, he takes a large cartoon mallet to initiate the hearing, causing it to squeak as he strikes it. Buddy Crane, played by Cena, delivers his opening statement, emphasizing the liberty we enjoy in our nation, such as chasing after swift birds, or buying Acme products for that purpose. However, he warns against recklessness. As he makes this point, Wile E. Coyote holds up a sign reading “Acme Sucks.” He concludes by expressing blessings for America and the military. Upon sitting down, Avery remarks on Buddy’s eloquence, unaware that the court stenographer is recording everything he says for the official record.
The initial arguments presented by Forte start off weakly. He queries the jury, a mix of humans and cartoon characters like Miss Prissy, with a question: “What is the defense’s response here?” As he struggles to find his words and trips up, Wile E. Coyote retrieves a rocket skate and presents it as evidence for Avery. Avery mentions that his client intends to demonstrate the skate’s faulty on-switch. Upon Avery activating it, the skate careens around the room, causing chaos by knocking items and people over, including Wile E. himself. The court sketch artist’s drawings depict the aftermath, showing Judge Guzman’s robes ablaze and Cena’s Crane attempting to extinguish the flames, creating a humorous scene.
That evening, Avery finds himself perched on the hotel bed when an enigmatic phone call arrives. To avid fans, the voice will undeniably sound like Bugs Bunny, but Avery remains unfamiliar with it, causing the cryptic message to elude him. The voice promises aid in the ongoing case, instructing Avery to rendezvous with a certain individual who could potentially crack the case open, all he needs to do is show up at 666 Scary Road Drive by 6 pm.
After much anticipation, the panel unveiled the complete trailer for this upcoming movie, brimming with an astounding blend of animated and real-life explosions, set to the iconic tune of William Tell’s overture. The scene shifts between Wile E. Coyote accidentally detonating a cartoon stick of dynamite, leaving him in a cloud of smoke, and another action-packed moment where someone literally rips up the asphalt like a rug, launching an actual 18-wheeler truck into the air!
The trailer also boasts several exciting cameos. The Tasmanian Devil makes a whirlwind appearance, followed by cartoon Peter Laurie and Granny. A shadowy figure resembling Bugs Bunny in a trench coat and hat flashes across the screen, while Tweety Bird finds himself squished within John Cena’s towering hand! To cap it all off, the classic phrase “That’s all folks” is written in dust on the back of a car. As a movie enthusiast, I can hardly wait to see this masterpiece unfold on the big screen!
Excitingly, “Coyote vs Acme” will be released soon, but unfortunately, we have to wait until August 26, 2026. However, with only about a year left until the release date (397 days from now), the anticipation for fans to finally witness this footage and uncover what Warner Bros. has been trying to keep secret all this time is growing ever stronger.
