When Michael Jackson and Debbie Rowe had their two children, Prince Jackson in 1997 and Paris Jackson in 1998, people around the world were naturally curious about their unique family life.
Debra Rowe, a nurse who worked with Michael Jackson’s doctor, Arnold Klein, secretly married Jackson in Australia on November 15, 1996. This happened just ten days after Jackson revealed Rowe was six months pregnant, and only three months after his divorce from Lisa Marie Presley became official.
Presley, a mother of four who passed away in 2023, shared in a 2003 interview with Playboy that Michael Jackson desperately wanted to be a father with her, but she was hesitant, fearing a difficult and messy custody battle. She also believed that Debbie Rowe was attracted to Jackson and volunteered to carry his children.
Michael Jackson’s second marriage ended in divorce in 2000, and he became the sole guardian of his children, Prince and Paris. He later had a third child, Bigi Jackson, in 2002, born to a surrogate mother whose identity remains private.
Rowe later ended her rights as a parent, telling the court in 2001 that she didn’t want to be involved in raising Prince and Paris, even if Michael Jackson passed away.

In a court filing from October 2001, as reported by CBS News, she praised Michael as a great father and explained she didn’t want to be involved in raising their children because he was already doing a good job parenting them on his own.
Rowe received $8.5 million from Jackson and later used the money to buy a horse ranch in Palmdale, California, where he settled down.
After Michael Jackson was accused of child molestation in 2003 (and later found not guilty in 2005), Debbie Rowe tried to regain custody of her children, Prince and Paris, and was allowed supervised visits with them after the trial. In 2006, a court determined the previous legal process for Rowe giving up her parental rights wasn’t handled correctly, which meant a new custody agreement was possible.
All of which happened at a time when Prince and Paris were barely cognizant of her existence.

Paris explained to Rolling Stone in 2017 that she didn’t know her mother growing up. It wasn’t until she was around ten years old, after understanding that men can’t have babies, that she asked her father about her mother.
Paris remembered asking who the woman was, and he simply replied, “Debbie.” Paris said she recognized the name.
When Michael Jackson passed away in 2009, his daughter was eleven years old. This left her, along with her brothers Prince and Blanket, to be raised by their grandmother, Katherine Jackson. A few years later, she began learning more about her mother.
The three siblings relied heavily on the large Jackson family for support. Paris, encouraged by her mother Katherine, reconnected with Debbie Rowe at age 15 and they’ve remained close ever since.
Prince, 29, briefly told Rolling Stone that Paris was in need of a maternal presence at that point in time.
Paris, 28, has said that after being estranged from her mother for so long, she doesn’t see their relationship as a traditional mother-daughter bond. She describes it as more of a connection between two adults.

Paris and her mother have generally kept their personal lives private, but they’ve shared some joyful moments publicly. For example, Paris celebrated her mother finishing breast cancer treatment in January 2018 with a post on Instagram, enthusiastically praising her mother’s strength and resilience.
Paris said she saw a bit of herself in Rowe’s battle with cancer, telling Rolling Stone that they were both “very stubborn.”
Yet that wasn’t all they had in common.
Honestly, hearing Paris talk about this on Red Table Talk just made my day! It’s so amazing she and I are friends. She said getting to know me is cool, and that we’re actually really alike! Can you believe it? And the best part? She loves country and folk music, just like me! I immediately sent her some of my tracks – I’m dying to know what she thinks! It’s a dream come true, seriously.
And not least, the singer-songwriter added, “We look a lot alike.”
That’s only become more apparent, with Paris doing some internet-breaking with her latest tribute.

She wished her mother a Happy Mother’s Day, jokingly crediting her as the original model for her appearance. She shared photos on Instagram Stories that clearly showed how much mother and daughter look alike.
In a rare public statement about their relationship, Rowe shared in 2018 that Paris had been a strong source of support for her while she was undergoing cancer treatment.
Rowe described her as incredible, sharing with Entertainment Tonight that she’s been a constant support. He said she was one of the first people to reach out when he found out, contacting him within thirty seconds.
Rowe shared how much she cares for this person, describing a close relationship filled with shared activities like grabbing sushi, discussing music, and frequent texting.
Beyond their time at the ranch and all the other things they enjoy, Paris’s latest photos clearly show they still share a loving connection and a smile.
