Jon Bernthal truly committed to his role as Frank Castle in Punisher: One Last Kill. He stated he wouldn’t have continued if he hadn’t been happy with how Marvel portrayed the character. Now, he’s embarking on a promotional tour for the special presentation, which has received strong positive reviews from both critics (84% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences (92%).
In an interview with ScreenRant, Jon Bernthal and his co-writer Reinaldo Marcus Green talked about a fiery stunt in which a villain briefly sets the Punisher on fire. Green confirmed that the scene wasn’t CGI – it actually happened.
It was genuinely dangerous, real fire, and we were all trying to talk him out of it – I was one of them. I kept asking if he was sure, and letting him know we’d support him either way. It takes a lot of courage to put yourself through something like that. Watching Jon prepare was intense, but he wasn’t doing it for the thrill of it. That’s what makes him remarkable. He did it because it served the story and the character he was portraying; it was about the work, not about seeking attention.
You know, speaking with the director, this scene really stood out for him. He described it as a turning point – the first time we truly see the narrator shed his unreliability and become…real. It’s not just metaphorical fire anymore; it’s actual fire, and Jon’s finally awake. That’s when things really kick off, when the danger truly comes to life, so to speak.
Jon Bernthal Has a Strong Vision for the Punisher

In the final moments of Punisher: One Last Kill, Frank Castle makes a crucial decision. He’s faced with a choice: continue his quest for revenge against Ma Gnucci, or shift his focus to helping others by stopping riots in Little Sicily. He ultimately chooses to be a hero and protect the community, which is the central theme of this story. As Green explained, the story was always intended to show Frank fighting for the people and finding the best way to demonstrate that he was dedicated to protecting them.
Jon Bernthal was initially hesitant about where the Punisher’s story could go after Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but he emphasized this portrayal will be a very focused version of the character. He explained that this Punisher will directly target criminals and those who harm innocent people, and he’ll take these cases personally – which always makes things more intense. Considering the Punisher will unexpectedly act as a protector for Sadie Sink’s character in Brand New Day, that statement is particularly interesting.
The Punisher’s future looks promising. Marvel’s Spider-Man movies often introduce key characters for the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the Punisher is a standout in the recent Brand New Day. This likely means One Last Kill is being tested as a potential spin-off, and it won’t be surprising if a new Punisher series is officially announced soon.
