Chasing Utopia – REVIEW

The rise of AI…

Artificial intelligence has been a hot topic, but the release of ChatGPT really let people experience this groundbreaking technology firsthand. While many have used it for fun, creating images and videos, the documentary ‘Chasing Utopia’ explores a more serious side. It follows Mo Gawdat, a former Google X executive, who recognized the potential dangers of AI, prompted by a casual remark from Elon Musk that AI could potentially cause humanity’s extinction if it were to go wrong.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming more intelligent, with some estimates suggesting its capabilities are doubling every six months – a stark contrast to the rate of human learning. This documentary follows Mohamed Gawdat as he speaks with leading technology experts worldwide, sharing his concerns about the incredibly fast and potentially uncontrollable development of AI.

Chasing Utopia…..

It’s concerning how quickly AI is developing, driven by companies focused on profit and dominance – in fact, more money is being invested in AI now than was used for the entire Apollo moon program. Mohamed Gawdat, after witnessing robotic arms unexpectedly learn to grasp objects and then share that ability, believes we can build kindness and ethical considerations directly into AI’s core programming, potentially preventing any future takeover scenarios.

It’s debatable whether this is alarmist or simply an acknowledgement that machines are rapidly gaining intelligence – a process that began with early tools like the abacus. Regardless, it’s prompting the tech industry to take action.

The danger….

I’m honestly a little worried about how fast AI is developing. It feels like it’s getting to the point where it could eventually take everyone’s job. What’s really concerning is that it’s not starting with simple tasks; it’s already moving up to jobs that require more skill and intelligence – you could even argue it’s begun with people like Brooklyn Beckham. While a CEO might see this as a way to boost profits, they don’t seem to realize it could ultimately cost them their job too. It’s a bit of a blind spot, honestly.

Mohamed Gawdat is understandably concerned about the growing power of AI, and his efforts to raise awareness are commendable. However, his proposed solutions for controlling the technology feel somewhat unclear and optimistic, especially considering that money and influence are the main forces pushing AI forward.

The future?

The growing popularity of AI influencers, the possibility of creating viruses through 3D printing, and the misuse of data for surveillance, aggressive marketing, and gambling all make the subject of technological advancement both captivating and worrying. It feels like we may be facing an unstoppable force driven by companies focused on quick profits, leaving us potentially powerless to control it. In fact, the early Terminator movies might turn out to be eerily predictive of our future.
