Coronation Street airs exposure of major Driscoll family secret in early ITVX release

Coronation Street has more than one murderer among its residents. While viewers are focused on current suspects like Tracy Barlow and Gary Windass, and the mystery of Theo Silverton’s death, the show is revisiting a decades-old crime. Maggie Driscoll, played by Pauline McLynn, actually committed murder 35 years ago when she killed her husband, Alan.

As you may remember from last year’s episodes, the Driscolls were experiencing problems in their marriage, and things were starting to fall apart.

A fight between Maggie and Alan ended in tragedy when Maggie pushed Alan down the stairs, and he died from his injuries. Their young son, Finlay, saw everything happen and was deeply traumatized by his father’s death.

Maggie has always claimed it was a terrible accident, but it’s bothered her for years. She didn’t realize Finlay knew what really happened, until Melanie, her ex-daughter-in-law, revealed the truth during the dramatic events on Coronation Street.

It became clear Melanie had continued to communicate with her brother-in-law even after separating from Ben, and he had told her about the moment Maggie killed Alan. Megan Walsh, a known child abuser (played by Beth Nixon), overheard the conversation and secretly recorded it on her phone.

Melanie pressured Maggie by blackmail, leading her to persuade Will, a teenager, to move to Scotland. However, Will saw this as a chance to escape and instead ran away to France, where he was living with his abuser, Megan.

Tim Metcalfe was able to connect with the young person and persuade him to go to the police. As a result, Will didn’t end up traveling to either France or Scotland, because Ben wanted to keep him nearby.

Maggie was shocked when Megan called with a threat: she’d tell the police what she knew about Alan’s death unless Will dropped the charges against her. Feeling trapped, and with Melanie still questioning why Will hadn’t moved in with her, Maggie realized she had no choice but to tell the truth.

She asked Ben to sit and then explained the whole story. Alan was aware she’d had an affair with Jim McDonald, and Ben was the result. This affair was ultimately what caused their last fight.

He was extremely angry and pressed her for all the facts. Maggie wasn’t truthful, claiming she didn’t know for sure if she was to blame. She added that she was afraid of going to jail and that he and Finlay would be placed in foster care if she did.

That afternoon, Maggie arrived at the Chariot Square Hotel and explained to the owner, Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney), that she’d had a fight with Ben. Debbie, understanding how complicated family relationships can be, encouraged Maggie to try and reconcile with him quickly, before it was too late.

Will Ben ever be able to forgive Maggie, and will Megan go through with her threat?
