The newest expansion for the Pokemon Trading Card Game, Mega Evolution—Chaos Rising, builds on the story of Pokemon Legends: Z-A and features Greninja as a central character. It brings the game’s narrative to life through collectible booster packs.

I got to thoroughly examine all the new products – including the Build & Battle Box, Elite Trainer Box, Booster Bundle, and Booster Display Box – and now have a good understanding of what this set offers, its strengths, and areas for improvement before it releases on May 22, 2026.

Chaos Rising At-A-Glance

The storyline of Chaos Rising is particularly intense for the Mega Evolution series. A powerful Mega Floette ex has appeared in Lumiose City and is causing widespread destruction, and it’s up to Mega Greninja ex, with support from Mega Pyroar ex and Mega Dragalge ex, to protect the city.

This new set includes five powerful Mega Evolution Pokémon ex, five regular Pokémon ex, and a variety of rare cards – 11 illustration rares, 18 ultra rares, and 6 special illustration rare Supporter cards. In total, there are 122 cards, making it a slightly smaller release compared to some others, which we’ll discuss shortly.

The Products I Opened

I opened numerous packs from the various Chaos Rising products to compare what kinds of cards you could get and how rare they were in each one.

Build & Battle Box

The Build & Battle Box is a great way to try out the Chaos Rising set without buying a lot of cards. It comes with a pre-made 40-card deck and four booster packs, making it ideal for new players or anyone who wants to quickly learn how the set works. You can pre-order these boxes on Amazon, but they won’t ship until May 29th – a week after the official release date.

Booster Bundle

The Booster Bundle was a real turning point for me. While six packs might not sound like much, I was lucky enough to get all four forms of Deoxys in one bundle, which seemed like a deliberate choice by the set’s creators. I also noticed complete evolution lines – like Zubat evolving into Golbat and then Crobat, or Stunky into Skuntank – appearing together more often than usual, both within boxes and even individual packs. It’s hard to say if that was intentional, but it definitely made opening each pack more enjoyable. You can pre-order the Booster Bundle now at Walmart for $64.99.

Elite Trainer Box

The Elite Trainer Box is a popular choice for Pokémon collectors, and the Chaos Rising version is a great option. It comes with everything you need to play and collect: nine booster packs, a shiny Fennekin promo card, 65 card sleeves, 40 Energy cards, a player’s guide, dice for keeping track of damage, a coin for flipping, a plastic coin, a collector’s box with dividers, and a code card for the Pokémon TCG Live online game. Booster Display Box

The Display Box is the best value if you want a large number of booster packs from the new expansion – it contains 36. If you’re hoping to find the rarest cards or get enough packs for drafting with friends, this is the most cost-effective way to buy them. It’s currently available for preorder on Amazon for $294.95, and that’s likely the lowest price you’ll find, especially after the set is released.

And if you just need a quick fix, individual booster packs will be available on Amazon as well.

The Card Art Direction and Highlights

Even though Chaos Rising is set in a city under attack, much of the artwork focuses on beautiful, natural environments. This is a bit unusual for an expansion emphasizing urban conflict—though there’s plenty of that too—and it makes it different from some other recent releases. However, this is just a comment on the art style, not a criticism. The artwork is consistently impressive, particularly the rarer, more detailed illustrations.

As a big fan of Pokémon cards, I have to say the most sought-after card in this set is definitely Mega Greninja ex, especially in its stunning Hyper Rare version – it really delivers on the visual hype. But honestly, Mega Floette ex is the one I’m really after. It’s my personal favorite and the card I’m most excited to collect!

With only 122 cards, this set is smaller than most, which might feel limiting to casual collectors. However, competitive players and dedicated collectors focused on rare artwork probably won’t notice the smaller size, especially considering the high quality of the rarer cards.

Bring On the Chaos

The Pokemon TCG: Mega Evolution—Chaos Rising expansion is best enjoyed by players who are willing to take their time. While the set is fairly small at 122 cards, and the urban-destruction theme isn’t always reflected in the card art, the most powerful cards are still excellent additions to any deck.
