The phrase “worst of all possible worlds,” taken from the story’s description, has led many readers to believe that The Mortal Thor (written by Garth Ennis with art by Cliff and Terese Nielsen and Chris Moeller) will take place on Earth-9591. This version of the Marvel Universe is arguably the most heartbreaking and destructive ever depicted in comics.
The story Ruins centers on Philip Sheldon, a character whose home world is drastically different from the one seen in the story Marvels. While Marvels showed Sheldon reporting on the amazing heroic acts happening around him, Ruins follows his desperate attempt to figure out what caused everything to fall apart on his world.
The comic series Ruins presented a shockingly grim take on classic Marvel characters and ideas. For example, Bruce Banner didn’t become the Hulk; instead, he was depicted as a horrifying, growing mass of tumors. Many consider Ruins to be one of the darkest and most disturbing alternate realities in Marvel history, though it’s not the only one that explores such bleak concepts.
The fourteenth issue of The Mortal Thor promises to be a significant one. It’s also designated as issue #800 in the overall Thor series, thanks to Marvel’s Legacy numbering. Because of this milestone, fans anticipate major developments, potentially tying into events from The Mighty Thor.
