As the face of the Pokémon franchise, Pikachu has appeared on a huge number of Pokémon cards – over 300 in total, including many valuable promotional cards. We’ve seen incredible sales like Logan Paul’s Pikachu Illustrator card and intense bidding wars for the Pikachu with the Grey Felt Hat. However, with so many Pikachu promos available, most aren’t particularly valuable. That’s why it’s so surprising and interesting to see some older, less-known promos suddenly becoming much more valuable recently.
Starting in early 2025, a Pikachu card from 1998 has begun selling for significantly more money than it used to. Both regular and professionally graded versions of the card are increasing in value, but the professionally graded PSA 10 version has seen the largest price jump, according to PriceCharting. This card, the 1998 Ooyama’s Pikachu promo, was originally available only in Japan as part of a special vending machine series. Uniquely, the card was fully hand-drawn by Pokémon TCG illustrator Kouichi Ooyama and was distributed on a sheet where collectors could peel off individual cards. While always rare, this vintage card has historically been affordable. However, that appears to be changing.
Hand-Drawn Pikachu Card Selling for Over $600 More Than in 2025 (And That’s Ungraded)

This Pikachu card is special because it’s completely hand-illustrated – every detail, from the numbers to the energy symbols, was drawn by hand. The picture shows a cute, sleepy Pikachu relaxing on the beach. It’s a great find for Pokemon card collectors, especially since it looks very different from typical cards and is quite rare. These cards were only sold in Japan and weren’t released anywhere else.
Ooyama’s Pikachu card, while uncommon, wasn’t always a highly sought-after collector’s item. Earlier in 2024, an ungraded version typically sold for around $150. That’s a decent amount, but less than many other rare Pikachu cards. However, recently, the card’s value has been consistently increasing, with sales prices now exceeding any previous records.
An ungraded Ooyama Pikachu card has significantly increased in value, jumping from around $250 in May 2025 to a recent sale price of $900. This is a dramatic rise, but it’s not even the most remarkable thing about this card. Because it was originally printed on a sheet, the card can be removed and professionally graded. This means perfect condition (PSA 10) versions of the Ooyama Pikachu exist, and they’ve been selling for record-breaking prices.
Earlier this year, a perfectly graded (PSA 10) version of this Pokémon card was selling for around $4,300 – a significant amount, even for Pokémon collectors. However, recent sales have far exceeded that price. Just today, one sold for $8,200 on eBay, and in April, another fetched over $9,300. What’s driving this sudden increase in value?
Why Older Pokemon Cards Are Getting Fresh Attention from Collectors

It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly why older Pokémon cards, like this Ooyama Pikachu promo, are suddenly becoming more valuable. However, with Pokémon remaining popular among collectors and resellers, many rare cards have seen price increases in recent years. The upcoming 30th anniversary in 2026 is also driving up interest in nostalgic cards, and this Pikachu seems likely to be one of them.
Japanese Pokémon cards, especially those not originally released in the United States, are increasingly popular with collectors. Combined with the fact that cards originally obtained from vending machines are less likely to be graded as perfect (PSA 10), this has probably caused a recent increase in the value of this particular card. This trend applies to many older cards as well, from a time when people didn’t usually keep them in perfect condition as investments. As a result, there are fewer pristine, graded copies of these vintage cards available, especially for rare promotional items like this one.
This Pikachu illustration has suddenly become very popular with collectors, and several things are contributing to the surge in demand. It’s uncertain if this will last, but right now, it’s selling for much more than it used to. If you happen to own one, it’s worth keeping it in good condition.
