PS1 Game From 1998 Gets Unexpected New Release

A PlayStation 1 game from 1998 – a year many consider the peak for the original PlayStation – has surprisingly been re-released this week. That year saw the launch of iconic titles like Metal Gear Solid, Spyro the Dragon, Resident Evil 2, Gran Turismo, and Tekken 3, among many others that defined the console. While this particular re-release isn’t as well-known as those classics, it’s still significant because the original game is now hard to find.

Hamster has released Master of Monsters: Disciples of Gaia on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. This strategy game first came out in North America in 1991 for PC, and became well-known on the Sega Genesis. In 1998, SystemSoft released an updated version for the PlayStation 1, called Master of Monsters: Disciples of Gaia, and this is the version that Hamster has now brought to modern consoles.

In the simulation war game Master of Monsters: Disciples of Gaia, players follow Iros, a boy with divine powers, on a quest to overcome Gaia. Players can command monster armies and summon creatures from other worlds with the help of a powerful ally known as Master, battling enemies and strengthening their own monsters along the way.

The classic game Master of Monsters: Disciples of Gaia is now available on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch as part of Hamster’s weekly “Console Archives” series. It launched today, May 14th, and can be downloaded digitally for $11.99. This new version includes a few improvements, like extra save options and the ability to customize the button controls.

Since it’s become really hard to find and play Master of Monsters: Disciples of Gaia legally, it’s great that Hamster has made it more accessible. If you loved the original PlayStation game and wanted to play it again, this is now the easiest way to do so.
