Mortal Kombat II brought back many popular characters from the first game, like Raiden, Liu Kang, and Sonya Blade, and introduced new fighters such as Kitana and Johnny Cage. Even characters who died in the original game, like Kung Lao and Kano, found a way to return. However, seven characters from the first Mortal Kombat didn’t appear in the sequel.
7. Allison Young

Cole Young was the central figure in the first Mortal Kombat reboot, and his wife, Allison, played a significant role as well. However, in Mortal Kombat II, Cole appears much less, and Allison isn’t in the film at all—a surprising change for anyone who saw the original. The sequel completely shifted focus away from Cole’s story, and even omitting any mention of Allison was unexpected.
6. Emily Young

Allison wasn’t the only character overlooked in the sequel; the Cole family was largely absent. Surprisingly, neither Cole’s wife nor his daughter Emily appeared, especially Emily, as her relationship with Cole was a key part of the first movie. She was his biggest supporter, making her absence in the sequel quite noticeable. However, given the events surrounding Cole, there’s still hope Emily might appear in a future installment.
5. Reiko

General Reiko, a loyal follower of Shang Tsung in the first movie, didn’t appear in the sequel. He previously defeated Jax, but Jax later got his revenge, soundly defeating Reiko after unlocking new powers. Jax not only broke Reiko’s hammer but brutally defeated him, finishing the fight with a devastating blow. Unlike Kano, Reiko remained dead and didn’t return for the next film.
4. Nitara

Similar to Reiko, Nitara sided with Shang Tsung during his surprise attack on the heroes at Raiden’s Temple. Kano managed to break down the protective barrier, allowing the attack to begin, but Nitara wasn’t successful. She attempted to fight Kung Lao, but he defeated her with a powerful Razor’s Edge. Unlike some other fallen fighters, Nitara remained dead, though it’s possible she could return in the future.
3. Kabal

Kabal fights alongside Reiko and Nitara at the Temple, giving Liu Kang a tough time in their initial battle. Though Kang is forced to retreat with the others, he later faces Kabal again. This rematch is different; Kang takes some damage but ultimately defeats Kabal with a fiery attack, avenging Kung Lao’s death at the hands of Shang Tsung. This explains why Kabal isn’t seen in the next game.
2. Mileena

Mileena is a well-known villain in Mortal Kombat, and she faced off against Sonya Blade. Mileena briefly defeated Sonya, even wounding her shoulder, but left when she realized Sonya wasn’t who she was looking for. Later, Mileena fought Cole, using her teleportation to initially challenge him. She attempted to finish him in hand-to-hand combat, but Sonya ultimately got her revenge, defeating Mileena with an energy blast, seemingly removing her from the fight for now.
1. Goro

One of the most exciting fights in the first movie is between Cole and Goro. Goro surprises Cole and his family with a sudden attack. Cole initially tries to use stealth, but Goro overpowers him, prompting Allison to intervene with an axe. They even attempt to stop Goro with a truck, but when that fails, Cole’s hidden powers finally emerge, giving him a powerful armored suit and increased strength. This allows Cole to fight back, growing stronger with each hit he lands on Goro.
Cole delivers a decisive attack, severing one of Goro’s hands before fatally stabbing him in the eye and slicing open his stomach. Goro is killed instantly, and it’s unlikely he’ll return to the fight anytime soon.
Mortal Kombat II is in theaters now.
