Free Companies are the heart of Final Fantasy XIV – this is what they mean to its players

At its heart, every massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) is about people playing together. Though many MMOs, including RuneScape with its Ironman mode, can be played alone, the main focus is always on how players interact with each other.

Because of this, all good massively multiplayer online games need a way for players to connect and team up. World of Warcraft offers Guilds, RuneScape has Clans, and Final Fantasy XIV features Free Companies, or FCs, for this purpose.

Essentially, it’s a way to help people experience content together. However, groups focused on this can sometimes become exclusive, requiring a significant time commitment from members to efficiently complete challenging activities.

But for most, they are a community, and one in which lifelong friendships are made.

I was at Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest in Anaheim last month, and I got to chat with a really cool Free Company called the Y’shtola Project. It was awesome because they’d been playing together for five years, but this was the first time they’d all actually met up in person at Fan Fest!

Originally starting as a small group within another Free Company (FC), YP has quickly grown to almost 30 members. While many FCs in Final Fantasy XIV can hold up to 1,000 players, YP’s smaller size creates a close and supportive community.

YP has been a fantastic way to connect with others and build a community,” said Sunny, who has been a member for a long time. “I honestly wasn’t sure it would be for me at first.”

After being “pestered to join,” he concedes that it is “the best decision I’ve made playing 14”.

Besides the social aspects – like enjoying time with friends, playing the game, tackling raids, and visiting places like the Golden Saucer, as Sunny explained – YP helps some players connect with Final Fantasy XIV in ways they might not have otherwise.

He shared that he feels anxious about using the party finder to organize Savage Raids, but he’s much more comfortable asking people from his Free Company because he knows them well and they’re always happy to assist.

YP first formed as a group right before the launch of Endwalker, the fourth big update for Final Fantasy XIV. Although some members knew each other beforehand, this year was the first time they all came together specifically for an event like Fan Fest.

In addition to the two players who came from Southern California, others traveled to Anaheim from places like Chicago, Ohio, and even New Jersey, demonstrating the broad and dedicated community surrounding Final Fantasy XIV.

“We’re a little sad more people couldn’t get in, but we got to be here for them,” Sunny explained.

It’s really fun to share new game updates and announcements with everyone, like discovering new content, changes to the game, and special events such as trivia and Q&A sessions.

Massively multiplayer online games, and the guilds or communities within them, sometimes struggle with becoming exclusive and isolating. Final Fantasy XIV is similar – it can be hard to break into established groups.

Most players actually enjoy a positive experience with Final Fantasy XIV Free Companies. Talking to players reminds you that, for the majority, these groups are about teamwork and building friendships. It’s impressive how friendly the game’s community is, especially compared to many other online games.

It feels like a close-knit group,” Sunny explained. “When I’m bored and just want to stay in, it’s comforting knowing there’s always someone available to spend time with or do an activity with.

Even when we’re just relaxing, whether it’s outside the guild hall or at home, we’re extending our community to other games as well.

This group feels more like family than just friends or a typical community. Everyone is genuinely kind and creates a really positive atmosphere.

Since being updated with A Realm Reborn in 2013, player-created groups in Final Fantasy XIV, known as Free Companies, have become much more than just basic in-game guilds.

As a long-time player, I’ve seen some amazing things come out of Free Companies! It’s not just about the game itself – over the years, these groups have become places where people have made real friendships, strong alliances, and even found love, leading to marriages and families. It’s really heartwarming to see!

It’s amazing to think that people are alive today because their parents met through Free Companies. It’s a truly wonderful and mind-blowing idea when you stop to consider it.

Over the past 13 years, countless players – likely millions – have joined Free Companies in Final Fantasy XIV.

With the game moving forward and its leaders remaining strong, we hope Free Companies will continue to thrive for many years.
