The WONDERfools ending explained: What happened to the Child of Eternity?

Wonderfools, a Netflix series set in 1999, centers around a group of quirky individuals in Haeseong City who suddenly develop strange powers. They soon find themselves entangled in a larger mystery involving secret human experiments, unexplained disappearances, and the anxieties surrounding the year 2000.

I’m so excited about this new show! It stars Park Eun-bin as Eun Chae-ni, a really quirky character who keeps coming back to life, which sounds hilarious and a little wild. Cha Eun-woo plays Lee Un-jeong, a quiet guy who works at City Hall but is secretly connected to some strange experiments. Then there’s Choi Dae-hoon as Son Gyeong-hun, a poor florist who can stick to things – literally! And Im Seong-jae is Kang Ro-bin, who gets super strong when he gets emotional. It’s such a fun cast and the premise is totally unique!

I’ve been completely captivated watching these four heroes – they seemed so ordinary at the start, but they’ve gotten mixed up with this incredibly secretive group called the Wunderkinder. It turns out they’re connected to some really unsettling experiments happening under the city of Haeseong, and they all have these bizarre, almost unbelievable powers. It’s a wild ride seeing how everything unfolds!

With long-buried secrets of the city coming to light, the group faces escalating threats and a growing need to understand their own abilities.

So, what exactly happened in WONDERfools finale? Here’s everything you need to know.

Spoilers ahead for WONDERfools season 1.

WONDERfools ending explained: What happened to the Child of Eternity?

The final episode at last explains the tragic event that impacted the lives of nearly everyone in WONDERfools.

Twenty years ago, Dr. Ha Won-do secretly experimented on many children, hoping to find a way to make people live forever. He subjected them to dangerous chemicals and constant testing within a secret lab, which was later built into the Church of Eternal Salvation Prayer House.

During the experiments, a significant number of the 72 children died, and many others experienced harmful side effects, with some even developing unusual powers.

One child stood out in the experiments – known as the Child of Eternity. This child was unique because they could die and come back to life over and over again.

Won-do became fixated on understanding that power. Throughout the season, we see flashbacks showing the child was cruelly tortured in the lab, killed and brought back to life multiple times as scientists watched how the body healed.

Un-jeong, who was also one of the children trapped there, witnessed the experiments firsthand.

After Un-jeong’s powers spiraled out of control during an attempt to protect the Child of Eternity, the laboratory was completely destroyed by a large fire. Won-do was arrested, and the remaining children either vanished or were hidden away.

What are the Wunderkinder?

The Wunderkinder are the surviving children from Won-do’s experiments.

Those who developed supernatural abilities always suffered dangerous physical consequences. Years later, Won-do found the three remaining children with these powers – Ju-ran, Ho-ran, and Pal-ho – and used them to establish the Church of Eternal Salvation Prayer House. This organization functioned as both a religious cult and a disguise for his ongoing, secret experiments.

I was absolutely floored by how these so-called ‘Wunderkinder’ used their skills to convince people they were seeing actual miracles. It wasn’t magic, it was manipulation, and it was incredibly effective. They really knew how to work a crowd and make them believe.

Pal-ho, for instance, used his power over gravity to make people believe the church could cure illnesses and protect everyone from the end of the world.

It really struck me during the finale that Won-do never actually cared about the kids he used in his experiments. It was heartbreaking to realize he saw them as nothing more than subjects, not as people.

To him, the Wunderkinder were simply failed products in his search for immortality.

Is the Child of Eternity still alive?

Technically, yes — but not in the way many characters initially believed.

Honestly, all season long, I kept wondering if Chae-ni was actually the original Child of Eternity in disguise. It was a theory a lot of us viewers had, and the show definitely played with that possibility through various characters’ suspicions.

Following the initial accident in the lab, the Child of Eternity sustained severe brain damage. Falling debris from the fire crushed a portion of their skull.

While the child’s body could heal injuries, the brain couldn’t repair itself.

Chae-ni’s grandmother, Madam King, along with the other researchers, made a desperate choice: they transplanted the heart of the Child of Eternity into Chae-ni, who was seriously ill with a heart problem.

Essentially, the original child passed away, but their heart—and its capacity to heal and renew—lived on within Chae-ni.

This explains why Un-jeong develops feelings for Chae-ni, as she reminds him of a child he previously tried to help.

How did Chae-ni and her friends get powers?

Chae-ni’s special powers emerge after she unexpectedly dies in the first episode. While staging a fake kidnapping, she suffers a sudden heart attack. Her friends, in a panic, attempt to conceal her body by leaving it near a reservoir that’s linked to Won-do’s secret experiments.

Chae-ni miraculously comes back to life after being submerged in polluted water. Son Gyeong-hun and Kang Ro-bin experience the same strange effect when they fall into the reservoir, also becoming affected by the contamination.

Soon afterwards, all three begin developing abilities.

Chae-ni develops the ability to teleport, which is linked to both her heartbeat and how she’s feeling. Plus, a magical heart ensures she’s always revived whenever she faces death.

Robin becomes incredibly strong and almost impossible to harm when he feels strong emotions. Gyeong-hun can stick to things, like walls, thanks to a special ability.

Un-jeong, however, already had powers. He was one of the first children Won-do experimented on many years ago.

What is Madam King’s connection to the experiments?

Madam King has a deeper involvement in the experiments than Chae-ni first thought. The ending reveals she provided funding for Won-do’s research project two decades ago.

Even though she wasn’t directly involved in the experiments, she became connected to the project because she was trying to help her childhood friend, Chae-ni, who was seriously ill.

I’ve always admired Madam King, especially how she rushed to save the children after what happened at the lab. It really bothers me, though, to hear accusations from people like Ho-ran, who claim she only helped the kids who didn’t show any abilities, and left the powered ones behind. It’s a painful thing to think about, and I hope there’s more to the story.

Madam King herself carries deep guilt over what happened.

What was Dr Ha Won-do’s real plan?

The final episode reveals that Won-do wasn’t just trying to get the Heart of Eternity back from Chae-ni. During his fight with Un-jeong in the hidden lab, he finally explains what the experiments were really about.

Won-do initially set out to achieve immortality through his experiments. But he later realized that what humanity truly needed was to change and develop. His ultimate scheme was to release phenol into Haeseong city during the New Year’s Eve festivities.

Exposure to the chemicals could be fatal, cause harmful changes to people’s bodies, or unexpectedly unlock hidden powers in those who survived.

Won-do envisioned creating a new species and a completely new world, and he hoped to find others who shared his unique perspective – what he called having the ‘heart of eternity.’ The Church of Eternal Salvation Prayer House was, in reality, a means for him to collect funds, attract followers, and find people to experiment on, all in service of this grand plan.

What happens to Ha Won-do’s children?

The finale ends tragically for Won-do’s children: Pal-ho, Ju-ran and Ho-ran.

Pal-ho was the first to succumb to the harmful effects of the experiments, which ravaged his body. Ultimately, his skin turned hard and stone-like before he collapsed and died.

After losing both Pal-ho and Won-do in one night, Ju-ran is driven by a desire for revenge. She uses her psychic powers to control people – including ordinary citizens, police, and even Un-jeong – and tries to complete Won-do’s original scheme.

One of the most heartbreaking parts of the finale shows Ho-ran using her powers to look like Chae-ni, then stabbing Un-jeong. Unknowingly, Ju-ran tricks another person into stabbing Ho-ran, believing she was actually Chae-ni.

Ho-ran, looking like herself again, is badly hurt, but Un-jeong checks and finds she still has a pulse before they call for an ambulance. Ho-ran isn’t seen again after this.

Ju-ran collapses after pushing her abilities too far during the final battle, and it’s left uncertain whether she survives.

How do Chae-ni and her friends stop the attack?

When Chae-ni, Un-jeong, Ro-bin, and Gyeong-hun discovered Won-do’s plan to contaminate Haeseong city with phenol, they separated during the New Year’s Eve festivities.

Gyeong-hun finally discovers the chemical is concealed within a giant airship hovering over the city. Meanwhile, Un-jeong battles citizens and followers who are being controlled by Ju-ran, and Ro-bin uses his power to propel Chae-ni and Gyeong-hun upwards, allowing them to reach the airship.

Gyeong-hun holds onto the aircraft with his sticky powers as Chae-ni jumps on board. When the airship starts to explode, Chae-ni teleports herself and the entire aircraft away from Haeseong, preventing dangerous chemicals from spreading to the city.

The city is saved just as the year 2000 begins.

Is Chae-ni dead?

Despite initially seeming like Chae-ni died during the airship’s teleportation, she actually survives and comes back.

It’s just heartbreaking – 49 days after everyone thought she was gone, Madam King actually goes ahead and plans a memorial for her granddaughter. Then, out of nowhere, Chae-ni shows up back at the restaurant, but she’s totally disguised, looking completely different. It was such a shock!

Madam King immediately recognises her, and the emotional reunion confirms that Chae-ni survived.

Un-jeong later arrives and hugs her as the four friends are finally reunited after saving the city.

What happens in the post-credits scene of WONDERfools?

The Wonderfools ends with a post-credits scene that suggests the story may not truly be over.

Following the fighting in Haeseong, Un-jeong was happily reunited with his mother and went back to his job handling complaints at City Hall.

As a movie buff, I heard the authorities finally closed down the Church of Eternal Salvation Prayer House. It was a direct result of all the trouble caused by that New Year’s Eve attack – they just couldn’t keep it open after everything that happened.

Despite the destruction of the underground lab, footage reveals Dr. Ha Won-do’s body is starting to heal and rebuild itself.

Even though Un-jeong’s explosion left him with deadly injuries, he surprisingly began to recover, and then abruptly woke up.

The WONDERfools is available to stream on Netflix.
