Over the years, some Gundam series have become particularly popular with fans. In North America, Gundam Wing was a major breakthrough, introducing many viewers to the world of Gundam through its broadcast on Cartoon Network’s Toonami. It presented a unique setting quite different from the original Gundam story and other related series. Now, in a surprising announcement, the franchise is revisiting the world of Gundam Wing with a new project to commemorate its anniversary.
Bandai Namco announced during the Gundam Conference Spring 2026 livestream that a new project is in development for Gundam Wing. While they haven’t revealed exactly what it is, the series director, Naohiro Ogata, hinted it will be a substantial undertaking, saying, “It’s definitely something long.” Last year marked the 30th anniversary of Gundam Wing, celebrated with new artwork and a recreated anime battle. Despite not having new episodes in years, Gundam Wing remains incredibly popular, generating a lot of excitement for this announcement. A replay of the livestream is available in the video linked below.
The World of Wing
I’ve been thinking about what a new Gundam Wing anime could be about, and there are actually a few interesting possibilities. One of the most promising is New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Frozen Teardrop, a novel series that came out in 2010. It’s officially the first sequel to the original Gundam Wing story. It takes place many years after the original series ended, and it once again centers on Heero Yuy, but in a completely new setting. Heero has been frozen for years and wakes up to a future he didn’t expect, finding himself face-to-face with older versions of both his friends and enemies.
Gundam Wing was a really important show for Toonami and changed how shows were presented on Cartoon Network. Before Adult Swim became popular, this anime aired a version without edits late at night. And even though a continuation of the story is being made, many other Gundam projects are also in development.
North American fans of Gundam have a chance to see a new movie this weekend that continues the story of the original series. Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe features Noa Hathaway, a character connected to the legacies of both Amuro and Char. The film is planned as the first part of a three-movie series, and while the release date for the third movie isn’t set yet, the franchise’s popularity suggests it will arrive eventually.
