Daniel Radcliffe Reveals How He Influenced His Son’s “Weird Accent”

Daniel Radcliffe’s son gives him every brilliant thing he could ever want. 

Following his Tony Award nomination for Best Lead Actor for his performance in the Broadway play Every Brilliant Thing, Daniel Radcliffe revealed that his son, with partner Erin Durke, already has a long list of things that make life worthwhile.

Oh my gosh, I was listening to Daniel at the Meet The Nominees event, and it was everything! He said his list of the most amazing things in life? It’s completely just stuff his son does! Isn’t that the sweetest?! And he was joking about a sequel to the play, imagining the characters having kids and all the wonderful moments that come with being a parent. Seriously, I’m obsessed. It just… hits different, you know?

And his 3-year-old’s manner of speaking just might be at the top of that brilliant things list. 

Daniel described his son’s unique way of speaking as wonderful, explaining it’s a result of being raised with both American and English influences. He loves that his son’s accent is unpredictable and gives him a charming, distinctive voice.

The 36-year-old actor, who shares a son with his partner Erin, explained why the one-man play he’s performing is particularly meaningful to him. The play centers on a character who creates a list of positive things to cheer up his depressed mother. He especially appreciates the show’s brief moments where the audience gets involved.

He described the experience as both exciting and nerve-wracking. He admitted that’s why he wanted to be on the show – it gave him a rare opportunity to connect with a large audience. He really enjoyed being able to move around and interact with everyone before the performance, finding it a really cool experience.

Daniel will continue performing in the show, for which he received a Tony nomination, until May 24th. After that, Mariska Hargitay, known for her role on Law & Order: SVU, will take over the role.

Although the star of What If didn’t offer any guidance to the Emmy winner, he did share a clever method he uses for selecting people from the audience.

Daniel explained that he’s given the show’s casting director a couple of tips. One is that if an actor seems hesitant to take a role – perhaps because of family commitments – you should ask them about it while their children are present. Then, he suggests stepping away and letting the kids encourage their parent to accept the part.
