This article includes slight spoilers for the first two episodes of Dutton Ranch: “The Untold Want” and “Earn Another Day”.
Taylor Sheridan‘s Yellowstone is widely considered a modern classic. Since it first aired in 2018, the show has brought the Western genre back into the spotlight, launched a multi-part story about the Dutton family, and offered a high-quality drama that resonates with many Americans. Despite its success, the series stumbled with a few important choices.
Okay, let’s talk about the Yellowstone finale. Honestly, it was a bit of a mess, especially considering Kevin Costner’s sudden exit. The back half of the fifth and final season just didn’t deliver, and the way they handled John Dutton’s death was… strange. It turns out this corporate consultant, Sarah Atwood – who, bafflingly, never even interacted with John on screen – was the one responsible. It felt disconnected and, frankly, a little confusing as a payoff to the whole series.
Sarah Atwood fell into a common trap in Yellowstone: she was a female villain who lacked depth. Like Sarah, whose attempts to manipulate Jamie Dutton backfired, other female antagonists on the show were portrayed as simple, stereotypical corporate villains. Characters like Caroline Weaver and Willa Hayes, both former CEOs of Market Equities, couldn’t compete with the Dutton family’s harsh and unconventional methods. Angela Blue Thunder, intended as a counterpart to Beth Dutton from the Broken Rock Reservation, initially seemed like she might be different, but her character ultimately didn’t develop much.
I’m really excited to see what Sheridan’s doing with the new Yellowstone spinoff, Dutton Ranch! It feels like he’s making things right after some earlier issues. The show just started on Paramount+, and it follows Beth and Rip as they leave Montana with Carter and try building a new life – and a new ranch – in this made-up town called Rio Paloma in Texas. It’s a fresh start for them, and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds.
Beth Dutton, John Dutton’s daughter, finds herself facing a real challenge for the first time. In Rio Paloma, the powerful 10 Petal Ranch, run by the tough Beulah Jackson (played by Annette Bening), is the dominant force. Beulah is clever, ruthless, and fiercely determined, making her a worthy opponent for Beth and arguably the best female villain in the Yellowstone world. Fans might even see echoes of another key character from the original Yellowstone series in her.
Beulah Jackson Is One Of The Yellowstone Universe’s Best Antagonists, Not Just A Good Female Villain
While the male antagonists on Yellowstone are more intense, engaging, and impactful, they lack real depth. Beulah Jackson stands out as a genuinely refreshing and complex character.
As a big fan of Dutton Ranch, I have to say Beulah is one of the most frustrating characters they’ve introduced! While she definitely makes life incredibly difficult for Beth, I don’t think she’s purely evil. She actually loves her family fiercely – she’d do anything for them. You see it especially with her granddaughter, Oreana, and even with her son, Rob-Will, despite his battles with alcohol. Honestly, besides her family, the 10 Petal Ranch and keeping it going is everything to her. It’s clear that legacy means the world to her, and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to protect it.
Does the character of Beulah Jackson, a ranch owner obsessed with family and leaving a lasting mark, seem familiar? That’s because she’s essentially a dark reflection of John Dutton, the main character of Yellowstone. While John is the show’s hero, he’s also done awful things to safeguard his land and family. The existence of a secret dumping ground for his enemies is a clear sign of his ruthless side.
The main difference between Beulah and John Dutton is that John wouldn’t bully people. While John fiercely protected his own land, he didn’t want to fight or expand his holdings – he just wanted to be left alone to enjoy his ranch. Beulah, however, is determined to control all the ranches in Rio Paloma, including the one owned by Beth and Rip.
Near the end of the first episode of Yellowstone (formerly known as Dutton Ranch), Beth shares with Rip that her father never found happiness and expresses her desire for a calmer life. However, with Beulah threatening Beth’s way of life, achieving peace will be difficult, and the conflict between them promises to be intense.
