Why Amy Schumer Has Been So Candid About Her Health Issues

Amy Schumer has been entertaining audiences for years by sharing honest and often hilarious stories about her life.

And that includes what’s going on inside Amy Schumer.

Amy Schumer recently mentioned at a podcast event on May 17th that she hadn’t been feeling very sexual after a colonoscopy that didn’t go as planned, though she didn’t share specific details. This is just one example of the many times she’s openly discussed her health.

Okay, so Amy, she’s 44 and a mom to Gene, who’s seven—her ex, Chris Fischer, is his dad—and honestly, I admire her SO much. She’s deliberately talking about stuff that used to be considered super private, and it’s brilliant! She believes—and I totally agree—that there shouldn’t be anything off-limits when it comes to women’s health. It’s like, why should we be embarrassed to talk about this stuff? She’s just amazing for bringing it all out in the open.

In a February 2024 newsletter by Jessica Yellin, comedian Amy Schumer revealed her Cushing syndrome diagnosis and spoke about the constant pressure on women to conform to certain body standards. She shared that she’s personally experienced and observed a lot of criticism surrounding changing bodies, and expressed a strong desire for women to prioritize self-love and advocate for their health, even when the medical system doesn’t take them seriously.

After viewers of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon noticed changes in her appearance a week earlier, she shared that she’s been diagnosed with a manageable form of Cushing’s syndrome, a condition caused by the body making too much of the stress hormone cortisol.

Schumer acknowledged the feedback, and it’s well-known he’s often responded strongly to negative comments online.

She responded to comments about her appearance, saying she’s been getting feedback on how she looks for nearly 20 years – just like most women. She acknowledged she currently looks a bit puffier than usual.

Schumer later shared with Yellin that while promoting the new season of her Hulu show, Life & Beth, she was undergoing extensive medical testing—including four-hour MRI scans and frequent blood draws—and worried about her health and being able to watch her son grow up.

But, ironically, it was online critics who ultimately led her to seek treatment.

She remembered a time when people online really focused on her, and she initially tried to brush it off, saying something like, ā€˜Everyone needs to calm down.’ But then, she said on a January 2025 episode of Call Her Daddy, doctors started commenting, pointing out that something seemed seriously wrong with her appearance and that she didn’t look well.

She quipped, “And I’m like, ‘Wait, I’m getting trolled by doctors?'”

She discovered the cause of her Cushing syndrome was the steroid injections she’d been receiving for scarring from a breast reduction and her C-section in 2019.

Oh my gosh, it wasn’t all sunshine and roses, you know? I was so worried when I read that Amy actually had to go to the hospital because of her morning sickness! It’s called hyperemesis gravidarum – seriously, I had to Google it – and it’s way more than just feeling queasy. She was throwing up so much she got really dehydrated. I was just so concerned for her and the baby!

She shared on Instagram that while she and her baby are doing okay, the idea that the second trimester is easier isn’t true for everyone. She’s actually been feeling worse this trimester, struggling with severe nausea and vomiting – what she calls hyperemesis – and it’s been really tough.

Two years after giving birth to her son, Gene, Schumer shared on social media from her hospital bed following a hysterectomy. She had the surgery to address endometriosis, a condition where tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside of it.

In a video from September 2021, she shared that she had just had surgery and no longer had her uterus. The doctor discovered and removed thirty areas of endometriosis, and also took out her appendix, which the endometriosis had affected.

She explained in a follow-up video that she was sharing her story because a lot of people aren’t even familiar with the term ‘endometriosis’.

During a December 2022 interview on The Checkup with Dr. David Agus, Schumer described her struggle with endometriosis, calling it a very isolating condition. She explained that she felt like a completely different person after undergoing surgery.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen this pattern so many times. It’s often an invisible struggle, a pain people don’t understand. And unfortunately, there’s this frustrating habit of dismissing women’s experiences as simply being ‘overly emotional’ or ‘dramatic.’ It’s a real problem, because it minimizes valid feelings and prevents open communication.

After deciding she wouldn’t try to have another child, Schumer discussed her difficult experience with IVF in 2022. She had previously described feeling exhausted and upset during the process in 2020, as she hoped to have a second child.

She explained that many people go through this, and her own experience was terrifying. Speaking on Chelsea Handler’s Dear Chelsea podcast, she described undergoing IVF, receiving 31 eggs, and jokingly feeling incredibly fertile. However, after fertilization, they only had one healthy embryo, and the attempt to use it was unsuccessful. As a result of the process and subsequent complications, she no longer has a uterus.

She admitted she was upset, but explained that people often don’t offer support because there’s a perception that if you’ve experienced success already, you shouldn’t complain. However, she emphasized that this is a genuine hardship many people face.

Following her health struggles with Cushing’s syndrome, Amy Schumer shared a funny observation from her hospital bed after undergoing spinal surgery in August. She posted on Instagram that she overheard someone say the hospital was staying afloat thanks to pickleball players.

She shared a photo of herself with a walker, explaining that an old surfing injury had been causing her back pain for years. She recently had a laminectomy to address the issue and is optimistic about a quick recovery, joking that she’s looking forward to feeling well enough to buy a new bra!

In a recent health update, Schumer shared positive news about her well-being. She revealed she’s feeling much better and is now pain-free after struggling with endometriosis and back issues. She also announced she’s recovered from Cushing syndrome, which has restored her face to its normal appearance. Schumer expressed gratitude for her strength and health, particularly for the sake of her son.

And the following month, she revealed she’d lost 50pounds with the help of a GLP-1 medication.

She explained on Instagram that she wasn’t trying to look attractive, even though it felt good temporarily. She said she did it to address a serious medical condition that caused severe facial swelling and could be fatal, and thankfully, the internet helped bring attention to it, leading to its resolution.

Schumer addressed concerns about her weight loss, explaining she’s had cosmetic procedures and currently uses the medication Mounjaro.

Schumer isn’t just focused on the medical aspects of her body journey; she’s also embracing her physical transformation. She recently shared vacation photos, including some in a bikini, with a message about prioritizing self-care and self-love, and choosing to go without makeup or filters.

Let’s cherish our health, family, and friends, and make this year the best one yet. Let’s live without regrets and focus on love.

In May 2026, the host of the BFFs podcast had emergency surgery when doctors found a large cyst on her ovary. The cyst was twisting her internal organs and causing her to bleed internally.

I was absolutely shocked to learn just how much blood had accumulated after my surgery. Brianna, who shared her experience on TikTok, said they found half a liter of blood in her pelvic area! She also had five incisions on her stomach, and the doctors actually used a camera through her belly button to locate all of it. It’s a lot to go through, and I’m sending her all my support.

Former Total Bellas star reported that one of her breast implants moved after being hit in the chest by fellow wrestler Piper Niven during a match in July 2025.

Oh my gosh, you guys, she actually said this! She told Bella, her sister, that everything would be alright, that she’d get things fixed ‘one day’! And then she told the doctor – I’m literally obsessed with this part – she was like, ‘I’m newly divorced, so as SOON as I retire, I’m coming straight back to you and we’re going to make these girls look amazing because they’re going to be getting a lot of attention and they absolutely cannot look like this right now!’ It’s just… everything about it! She’s so determined, and the ‘girls’ getting ‘action’… I can’t even!

Lupita Nyong’o, known for her role in 12 Years a Slave, received a diagnosis of uterine fibroids—non-cancerous growths in or around the uterus—in 2014, the year she won an Academy Award for her performance in the film.

She didn’t reveal her diagnosis until 2025, when she shared on Instagram that she had been privately struggling with it for over ten years.

She explained that growing up, many girls are told that periods are supposed to be painful, and that this pain is just something women have to deal with. This often leaves people feeling like they’re going through a difficult experience on their own, when it actually affects so many of us.

Okay, so I was a little shocked to hear this, but Riley Keough recently shared that she actually ended up in the hospital because of a hernia! Apparently, it was caused by wearing pants that were just too tight. It’s a reminder that even though we love a good fashion moment, comfort and health really do need to come first. A hernia is basically a gap in your abdominal muscles, and tight clothing can sometimes contribute to that. Who knew, right?

Someone messaged Suki on X (formerly Twitter) saying, “You haven’t tweeted in a while!” Suki replied with a surprising reason: she injured herself six months ago by wearing very tight pants, causing a hernia, and has been afraid to mention it.

As a health and wellness advocate, I’m sharing that a familiar face, one of the stars from Beverly Hills, 90210, recently went through a bit of a scare. He let everyone know in April 2025 that he was recovering from surgery – it turns out his appendix was very close to bursting! Thankfully, he’s on the mend now.

I was really worried to hear that Brian was dealing with some stomach pain last week. He shared in a video that he actually had to go to the emergency room, and it turned out he had a perforated appendix – thankfully, it hadn’t quite burst yet, but it was very close! It was scary to hear, but I’m so glad he got it checked out quickly.

He added, ā€œI’m on the road to recovery. It’s not an easy process. This is my first major surgery.ā€

A Racing Louisville midfielder fell to the ground early in her team’s game against Seattle Reign on September 14th at Lumen Field in Seattle.

According to Reuters, the U.S. Women’s National Team player sat down on the field with a teammate for support just before collapsing. Trainers were immediately called to assess her condition.

After receiving immediate medical attention on the field, Savannah was taken to a nearby hospital for further tests, the National Women’s Soccer League announced. She is currently in stable condition and is alert.

Adam Devine revealed that injuries from being hit by a cement truck at age 11 continue to cause him problems even now.

ā€œIt’s been incredibly difficult,ā€ Devine shared on the In Depth With Graham Bensinger podcast in 2025. ā€œI’ve been experiencing spasms all over my body, and doctors recently told me I was facing a life-threatening situation—just within the last year.ā€

He explained that his pain is intermittent, and described having some physical imperfections, saying, “My body just has a few things that aren’t quite right.”

A former contestant on The Bachelor went to the hospital because of severe back pain. He said the pain was so bad he had to crawl on his hands and knees, and it got worse during a road trip with a friend.

He described a strange tingling sensation that still lingered in his legs as of March 2025, sharing this on his Trading Secrets podcast. To illustrate the extent of the issue, he mentioned that just a few weeks or a month prior, he was able to squat 295 pounds. Now, he can’t even do a squat, can’t balance on one leg, and falls over, describing the feeling as if he’d had a stroke.

But with the help of a back specialist and some steroids, he added, ā€œWe’re on the mend.ā€

Gina Kirschenheiter from The Real Housewives of Orange County revealed that her ex-husband, Matt Kirschenheiter, had a heart attack in March 2025, but he is recovering well.

In March 2025, the actor from 30 Rock experienced a medical issue at a New York Knicks game and had to be helped out of Madison Square Garden.

The comedian later posted on social media to explain he’d actually gotten food poisoning and was starting to feel better.

In February 2025, the former Even Stevens star revealed she was shot in the face during a birthday outing with her husband, Brendan Rooney. They were on a trip to go clay pigeon shooting when the incident occurred.

In an Instagram post, she explained that she was accidentally shot in the face by someone else at a party. They fired a gun unsafely, and she was hit five times, with one bullet narrowly missing her right eye. Brendan Rooney quickly helped her, evaluating her injuries and immediately taking her to the hospital.

The former Kim Possible star explained that a small piece of something got stuck behind their eye. Doctors have advised against surgery to remove it right now, but they’re keeping a close watch on the situation. Thankfully, their vision is currently normal.

The actress expressed immense gratitude for surviving. She shared her deep love for her daughters, husband, family, and friends, explaining that she’d had a near-death experience where she reflected on her life. She urged everyone to cherish their loved ones and hug them often, because life can change unexpectedly.

Amy Schumer is grateful for the internet, even though it can be harsh, because it helped her figure out what was wrong with her health. After noticing she looked ā€œpuffierā€ during interviews, people online began commenting, and surprisingly, doctors chimed in, suggesting she might have Cushing syndrome, a condition often linked to high cortisol levels or steroid injections. This prompted Amy to realize she’d been receiving steroid injections after a breast reduction and C-section. She wouldn’t have discovered this without the online comments. Thankfully, doctors determined she had a type of Cushing syndrome that would resolve on its own, which she called ā€œthe greatest news imaginable.ā€ Amy is now relieved to be healthy and doing well.

In December 2024, an AHL player suffered a skate cut during a game, requiring 25 stitches to close the wound. After his son made a full recovery, New Jersey Devils General Manager Tom Fitzgerald told ESPN how grateful they were, saying, ā€œWe feel very lucky, and I wouldn’t want any parent to go through that.ā€

Oh my gosh, I was SO worried about Hailey! Can you believe what happened to her? She was just having breakfast with Justin in March 2022, and she started having this terrifying moment – like, stroke-like symptoms came on suddenly. She said Justin kept asking if she was okay, but she couldn’t even answer the first time! Then, when she tried to speak, she just… couldn’t. Her face started drooping on one side, and she couldn’t get the words out. Thankfully, it stopped, and her speech came back, but she obviously went straight to the hospital. Turns out, she had a tiny blood clot in her brain – they called it a TIA. But the craziest part? They discovered she has a small hole in her heart, a PFO! Apparently, the clot traveled through that hole and went to her brain, causing the TIA. She had a procedure to close it, and thankfully, she says she’s feeling amazing now! I’m just so relieved she’s okay; it was so scary to hear about!

The same year Hailey faced a health issue, Justin also experienced one. In June 2022, he revealed he had been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which caused temporary paralysis on one side of his face. This forced him to cancel the remaining dates of his Justice World Tour.

In a video posted to Instagram, Justin explained the condition affected the nerves in his ear and face, preventing him from blinking, smiling, or moving his nostril on the affected side. He also shared it was becoming increasingly difficult for him to eat.

Fortunately, the paralysis eventually went away. Hailey later told viewers of Good Morning America that Justin was recovering well and was going to be okay, describing the situation as scary but random. She expressed her gratitude that he was on the mend.

Jamie Foxx recently shared details about the health scare he experienced in April 2023, which he had previously kept private. In his 2024 Netflix special, What Had Happened Was…, Foxx explained that he was suffering from a severe headache when he suddenly lost consciousness. He doesn’t remember the next 20 days.

Initially, a doctor gave him a cortisone shot and sent him home, but his sister, Deidra Dixon, grew concerned and took him to the hospital. Doctors discovered he had a brain bleed that resulted in a stroke.

After surgery, twenty days later on May 4th, Foxx woke up in a wheelchair unable to walk. He then traveled to Chicago for rehabilitation and therapy.

Foxx expressed his gratitude for the support he received, saying, ā€œI appreciate every prayer, because I needed every prayer.ā€

The reality TV star shared that she briefly stopped breathing while running a mile during the first challenge on the NBC competition show.

She shared on the show Fit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser that her memory of the event was fragmented. She recalled hearing a helicopter, feeling like she was floating, and then seeing her grandfather. After that, she remembers only darkness, followed by light, leading her to realize she had died that day.

She explained that her organs were failing. She hadn’t known she had rhabdomyolysis, a condition where the body essentially begins to shut down.

Emilia Clarke, known for her role in Game of Thrones, revealed a harrowing health battle in a 2019 essay for The New Yorker. While filming the series, she experienced a severe headache at the gym, followed by intense pain and vomiting. She quickly realized something was seriously wrong with her brain.

A hospital scan revealed she had suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a life-threatening stroke caused by a ruptured aneurysm. She underwent immediate surgery to repair it, describing the pain as “unbearable.” During her recovery, she temporarily lost her ability to speak, often muttering nonsensically.

Though she was discharged after a month, a 2013 scan showed the aneurysm had grown and required a second surgery. This procedure initially failed, leading to a major bleed and putting her life at risk. Doctors had to perform a more invasive surgery, accessing her brain directly through her skull.

Fortunately, Emilia reports that she has now made a full recovery and is “at a hundred per cent.”

Cori Broadus, Snoop Dogg’s daughter, recently shared her gratitude for her family’s support after she experienced a stroke in January 2024. She immediately reached out to them, sending a text and a picture, and they quickly came to her aid, as she told TopMob News’ Will Marfuggi in December 2024. Cori ended up staying in the hospital longer than expected due to complications with lupus and kidney issues. Thankfully, she is now recovering well. While she had to work on regaining some motor skills, she says she’s doing great and is otherwise feeling fine.

Shailene Woodley struggled with serious health issues throughout her 20s. In a September 2024 podcast interview, she explained that she experienced hearing loss, extreme fatigue, and digestive problems. She saw many doctors but received conflicting diagnoses.

Because of her background in holistic medicine and herbalism, Shailene decided to combine traditional medical care with alternative healing methods in her search for answers. This journey lasted for ten years.

The physical discomfort led to emotional challenges, including fear of food and issues with body image and identity. She described a period of confusion and feeling unsafe in her own body.

Fortunately, after years of focusing on both her physical and mental wellbeing, Shailene is now healthy and happy. She shared that her health issues ultimately resolved themselves, and she is grateful to be feeling well.
