A free upgrade for Darksiders: Warmastered Edition on PS5 has been released. This version is a remastered version of a game originally on PS3, and then PS4. However, players who already own the PS4 version will need to purchase the PS5 upgrade to access the improvements and updates.
Even though Microsoft offers a free upgrade path from the Xbox One to the newer Xbox Series X|S consoles, many players still face challenges.
PS4 players can upgrade to the PS5 version of the game for $10, which unlocks higher-resolution graphics (4K), a Photo Mode, and compatibility with the PS5 DualSense controller’s unique features.
The way PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S handle upgrades for the older game Darksiders differs because of how much the PlayStation 4 version still costs. PlayStation is keeping the PS4 version at $20, but the new PS5 version costs $30. Xbox, however, is raising the price of the Xbox One version to $30, making it the same price as the Xbox Series X|S version.
The idea is that since the PS4 version won’t cost more and you can upgrade to the PS5 version for free, it makes more sense to just buy the PS5 version. New players will pay the same price either way.
However, the ones losing out are the current PS4 owners looking to upgrade.
Players who already have the game need to pay $10 to upgrade from the PS4 version to the PS5 version. This upgrade is available for free on Xbox.
I’ve contacted THQ Nordic for more details, but here’s what they originally said in their official statement:
PlayStation 4 owners of Darksiders Warmastered Edition can upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for €9.99 or $9.99. Xbox One owners will get the upgrade to the Xbox Series X|S version as a free update.
When the game launches on Xbox Series X|S, it will cost €29.99 or $29.99. The price of the Xbox One version will also be updated to match, increasing from its current price of €19.99 / $19.99 to €29.99 / $29.99.
The game will still be available on PlayStation 4 for €19.99 or $19.99. The PlayStation 5 version will be released at a price of €29.99 or $29.99.
Okay, so I’ve been checking out the new Darksiders version for PS5, and honestly, if you’re on the fence about paying extra for it, you’re probably not missing too much. The first game was great when it came out, but let’s be real, it definitely shows its age now. The PS5 version does look a lot prettier with 4K graphics and runs super smooth at 60fps, but underneath all that, it still feels like the same game I played years ago. It’s a visual upgrade, for sure, but don’t expect a totally revamped experience.
It might be best to skip this game and wait for the next installment, Darksiders 4. You’ll also save ten dollars by doing so.
