Amy Adams’ cult classic movie from 20 years ago is racing back into theaters.
Amy Adams began her career with smaller parts in projects like Catch Me If You Can and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She later earned six Academy Award nominations for her work in films such as Vice, American Hustle, The Master, The Fighter, Doubt, and Junebug. Adams has also starred in critically acclaimed films like Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival and Spike Jonze’s Her, as well as Disney’s Enchanted, several DC movies, and the HBO series Sharp Objects. Her performance in Sharp Objects led to Primetime Emmy Award nominations for both Outstanding Limited Series and Outstanding Lead Actress.
To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Will Ferrell’s 2006 comedy Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby is returning to movie theaters. Columbia Pictures will be showing the film in select locations across the country on June 28th, 30th, and July 1st. You can watch a trailer for the re-release below.
Will Ferrell plays Ricky Bobby, a NASCAR driver trying to regain his racing glory, while facing off against Formula One rival Jean Girard (Sacha Baron Cohen). Amy Adams stars as Susan, Ricky’s assistant who becomes his love interest and a key supporter. The film also features John C. Reilly as Ricky’s friend and teammate Cal Naughton Jr., Leslie Bibb as Ricky’s wife Carley, Michael Duncan Clarke as his crew chief Lucius Washington, and Gary Cole as Ricky’s father, Reese.
Although Talladega Nights was well-received by critics and earned $163.4 million at the box office on a $72.5 million budget, it’s the movie’s hilarious quotes that truly made it a beloved classic. While “If you ain’t first, you’re last” is the most famous line, quotes like “I wake up in the morning and pee excellence,” “If you don’t chew Big Red, then f you,” and “Shake and bake!” have also become ingrained in pop culture.
Even after 20 years, Talladega Nights remains a highlight of Will Ferrell’s filmography. While Amy Adams has had many successful roles, including in films like Arrival and Enchanted, it’s hard to compare those leading performances to her smaller role in Talladega Nights. Surprisingly, despite both being major stars for the last twenty years, Talladega Nights is the only movie Ferrell and Adams have ever appeared in together.
This is just one of several movies starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, who also appeared together in films like Step Brothers, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, Tim & Eric’s Billion-Dollar Movie, and Holmes & Watson. Similar to Talladega Nights, Step Brothers has become a beloved comedy known for its memorable lines, even 18 years after its release.
Adam McKay directed and co-wrote Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby with Will Ferrell. Jimmy Miller and Judd Apatow produced the film. McKay continued to direct popular comedies like Step Brothers and Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, and also teamed up with Ferrell again for The Other Guys and with Amy Adams for Vice. His more recent work includes the satirical film Don’t Look Up, which was nominated for four Academy Awards.
Get ready to race back to the theater! Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby is returning to select cinemas on June 28th, 30th, and July 1st.
