One Piece Director Shares Spicy Take on Black Clover Finale

Certain anime series, like those featuring Asta and Monkey D. Luffy, have achieved iconic status. Now that Black Clover has finished its run, a prominent anime director has spoken about its ending. Henry Thurlow, known for his work as an animation director on key episodes of the hugely popular One Piece, recently shared his somewhat divisive opinion on how Asta’s journey to become wizard king concluded. He’s a dedicated anime fan and wasn’t afraid to share his thoughts.

Thurlow, who started reading the Black Clover manga last October, has now finished the entire series by Yuki Tabata. He recently shared his thoughts on the ending, describing it as “okay, not bad, not great, but it worked.” While he found the ending generally satisfying and appreciated that all plotlines were resolved and most characters received closure, he jokingly stated he’d be disappointed if there wasn’t an additional chapter showing a romantic relationship between Asta and Noelle. He particularly liked that the series made good use of its entire cast of characters, even in the final chapter.

Thurlow shared his honest thoughts on the ending of Black Clover, pointing out that the final arc felt rushed, especially the last few chapters. He also noted the lack of a surprising twist, a common element in previous arcs, and that the battles concluded abruptly. He strongly feels the story needs to provide resolution for Noelle’s storyline. Although the manga has finished, anime fans won’t have to wait long for more content. A new season of the anime is scheduled to premiere this fall, marking the first new episodes since 2021.

Anime director Henry Thurlow has worked on many popular series beyond One Piece, including Attack on Titan, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, Naruto: Shippuden, Pokemon, and Tokyo Ghoul. He also contributed significantly to One Piece Film: Red, the hit movie that introduced Shanks’ daughter. Currently, it’s unclear if Black Clover will receive an epilogue chapter, leaving Thurlow’s hopes for working on it uncertain.
