Quinta Brunson Set to Play Betty Boop in New Movie

Quinta Brunson is stepping into one very iconic red dress.

The creator of the hit show Abbott Elementary announced she’s writing and starring in a new movie based on the classic cartoon character, Betty Boop.

On May 21st, Quinta shared a post from Variety about the project on Instagram, writing, “excited to bring this story to life.”

The 36-year-old’s company, Fifth Chance Productions, is working on a movie in collaboration with Mark Fleischer, the grandson of Betty Boop creator Max Fleischer, and the Fleischer Studios family, according to Variety.

The movie will tell the story of Betty Boop’s creation and rise to fame, seen through the eyes of her creator, Max Fleischer. It will explore his relationship with the iconic cartoon character – who first appeared in 1930 – and the challenges he faced trying to make her a success.

As someone who keeps a close eye on cultural trends, I’ve always been fascinated by Betty Boop. She’s a true icon, and it’s amazing to me that she’s still somewhat of a hidden gem despite being so beloved! I was chatting with Erin Wehrenberg from Fifth Chance, and we were discussing just how much of a subtle but powerful impact Betty has had on our culture for almost a century now. It’s really quite remarkable.

After Erin and I spoke with Mark and heard about his grandfather’s work on Betty, I understood there was a richer story waiting to be told,” she explained. “I thought we could explore it in a way that felt both new and classic, just like Betty’s character.

For Mark’s part, he was intrigued by the Emmy winner’s “unique concept” for the film.

I was completely stunned,” he said in a statement. “Quinta truly captured Betty’s spirit – her joy, intelligence, wit, boldness, and kindness – and the connection between her and Max felt instantly real whenever she portrayed Betty.

This announcement follows the renewal of Abbott Elementary—where Quinta plays Janine Teagues—for a sixth season. While she’s thrilled the show is continuing its success, Quinta is also eager to work on other projects.

The Emmy-winning actor recently told Bustle that they’re currently reading scripts, hoping to find the perfect role. They also shared that after the success of Abbott Elementary, they want to help bring other creative projects to life.

As a huge fan, I love how Quinta always chooses roles that surprise people. She’s said it herself – she thinks every actor secretly dreams of shaking things up and not being pigeonholed!

While fans wait to see Quinta as Betty Boop, keep reading for more movies to look out for.
