What Kyle Busch Shared About His Health Before His Death

Kyle Busch often tried to pace himself when it came to his health.

The NASCAR driver passed away on May 21st at 41 years old after a private battle with an illness. He had been open about his health because he was determined to maintain his peak performance as a highly respected racer.

Just before he passed away, Kyle’s family announced that he had been hospitalized with a serious illness. His family includes his wife, Samantha Busch, and their two children, Brexton, age 11, and Lennix, age 4.

According to a statement posted on social media on May 21st, he is receiving treatment and will miss all events at Charlotte Motor Speedway this weekend. The family has asked for privacy and understanding during this difficult time.

The two-time Cup Series driver also received medical attention a few days prior, requesting a doctor after his race at Watkins Glen International on May 10th.

Kyle requested someone locate Dr. Bill Heisel, describing him as a doctor he knows, in a radio message shared on X (formerly Twitter) by FOX: NASCAR. He asked that Dr. Heisel be contacted after the race.

Kyle—who was dealing with a sinus cold during the race—added, “I’m gonna need a shot.”

The driver did not share what kind of shot he needed from his doctor at the time.

Earlier this year, Kyle was hospitalized with a serious leg injury after falling from a stool that collapsed while he was standing on it.

He described a recent incident on his wife’s podcast, Certified Oversharer, saying he managed to steady himself after a fall by grabbing onto the walls, assuring himself and anyone listening that he was okay.

I was so worried! It all happened so fast, but my little boy, Brexton, immediately noticed something was terribly wrong. He quickly pointed out that his dad wasn’t okay at all – his leg was bleeding really badly, and it was clear he needed help.

Kyle explained that when someone pointed out he was bleeding, he looked down and saw it wasn’t a small trickle like a nosebleed. Instead, he said the blood was pouring out, gushing heavily.

Despite needing 24 stitches for a serious cut, he’ll still be able to compete in the 2026 Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium in February, which is great news.

He faced a difficult 2015 season after a crash left him with a broken leg and foot, forcing him to miss 11 races. Though understandably upset about being sidelined, he was relieved the injuries weren’t more severe, particularly because it happened just before his son, Brexton, was born.

He told ESPN in 2015 that the incident could have resulted in a severe neck or head injury, or something even more tragic. He expressed gratitude and relief, saying he was thankful to still be alive and able to witness the birth of his son.

And Kyle was especially grateful to have Samantha by his side during his recovery.

I have a lot of love and respect for Samantha, and going through this experience with her by my side has been incredible. Her support has meant the world to me.
