Hocus Pocus Actress Thora Birch Comes Out as Bisexual

Thora Birch is sharing a magical truth.

The actress, known for her role in Hocus Pocus, recently shared that she identifies as bisexual and spoke about the positive influence the LGBTQ+ community has had on her life.

Growing up here, this community means everything to me, so I’m always happy to show my support. I was at The Abbey’s 35th Anniversary party recently and was telling Us Weekly how much this place, and being a bi woman, has truly shaped who I am. It’s really about giving back to the place that made me, me!

Thora, who married talent manager Michael Benton Adler in 2018, stressed how important it is to have a supportive community, particularly now when so many people feel divided.

She urged them to support each other, remain loyal, and extend the love they have for one another to those around them.

Thora added that the only way to overcome this difficult situation is by supporting each other and ending the conflict.

The 44-year-old actress, known for her roles in popular ’90s and early 2000s films like Now and Then, American Beauty, and Ghost World, recently celebrated The Abbey and the LGBTQ+ community. She also admitted she’s just as curious as fans are about what happened to the characters she played in those films.

A lot of my fans ask about Dani, my character from Hocus Pocus, and it’s nice knowing what happened with Teeny from Now and Then. I think it would be fun to revisit some of my other older roles, like Enid from Ghost World. It makes you wonder what she’s doing now – she’s still alive, as far as I know!

Yet, Thora said, “I think there’s also something nice about having them encapsulated.”

Although Thora Birch didn’t return as Dani Dennison in the 2022 Hocus Pocus sequel, she had said she’d be interested in appearing in Hocus Pocus 3 after Disney announced it.

She shared with Entertainment Tonight in October 2025 that she’s curious to see how the show explains what happened to her character, Dani. She’s definitely open to hearing their explanation, and since the showrunners enjoy discussing these kinds of things, she’s hopeful they will.

As a huge fan, I was absolutely thrilled to hear the news! It’s officially happening – the Sanderson Sisters are coming back to cast their spell on us all over again! TopMob News confirmed it earlier this month: Hocus Pocus 3 is in development, and Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy are all set to return as the iconic witches. I can’t wait!

With Pride Month approaching, Thora is showing her support for the LGBTQ community. Here’s a look at what other celebrities have shared about coming out.

The Dance Moms alum didn’t give it a second thought when she came out in a 2021 Instagram story.

She shared with People magazine in October 2023 that she came out at 17, but didn’t realize how significant that decision was at the time. She also admitted she didn’t understand why it felt frightening.

She explained that while she received a lot of support and acceptance, she also faced negativity and lost some things – and people – along the way. But she doesn’t regret it, saying she doesn’t care about losing those things or even fans, because staying true to herself is what matters most.

While the “Flowers” singer was never a big fan of labels, she came out as pansexual in 2016.

She shared with Variety in October 2016 that she’d never fully understood her own gender or sexuality. She’d always disliked the label ‘bisexual,’ feeling it was too limiting. She explained that she doesn’t focus on whether someone is male or female.

She also explained that she never saw her nipple pasties as sexual, adding that she became aware of her sexuality around fifth or sixth grade. She shared that her first romantic relationship was with a girl.

Telling his traditionally religious family he was gay was a turning point for Matt, beginning a new chapter in his life.

Okay, so Matt Bomer talked about coming out, and it totally wrecked me because he said it completely changed his life. He described it like there was a ‘before’ and ‘after’ – before telling his parents, and then after. He said the decisions he made, everything about his life, was just… different. Like night and day! It’s just so powerful to hear him talk about it that way, like it really split his life in two. He shares three kids with Simon Halls, and I just… I can’t even imagine how huge that moment must have been for him.

The singer of “Good Luck, Babe!” shared that she doesn’t always feel as self-assured as she appears, and growing up in the Midwest greatly influenced that.

She explained to Rolling Stone that she used to be afraid of openly gay men because that’s what she was taught. She later realized that people often dislike them simply because they express traditionally feminine qualities, and that this dislike stems from a broader prejudice against women. She described having a moment of clarity, realizing how deeply ingrained this bias is.

She explained that she’s had to overcome a lot of previously held beliefs, and she’s still figuring things out, which is why she sometimes feels uneasy about being gay. She doesn’t understand why she struggles with it, acknowledging it shouldn’t be a problem, but realizing she needs to accept her feelings as they are.

Former Bachelorette contestant revealed on The View that she is engaged to comedian Robby Hoffman, whom she married in January 2025.

She revealed in August 2023 that she’s been keeping her relationship quiet because it’s significant – she’s dating a woman.

She explained that she’d always had a quiet feeling inside, which gradually grew stronger. She hadn’t realized she should listen to it, and admitting that felt shameful at first. She had to understand where that shame came from and how to deal with it.

The actress known for her role in Mean Girls publicly came out as a lesbian in January 2024 while appearing on Saturday Night Live. She had previously shared that she was bisexual, and her friends supported her in making this announcement.

She later told Billboard that she suddenly found herself surrounded by nonbinary, transgender, and lesbian friends. Being with them made her realize, ‘I feel so happy, and I really want to identify as a lesbian when I’m with you all.’

The former late-night host officially came out as queer on the last day of Pride month in 2024.

She announced on Instagram in June 2024, on the final day of Pride month, that she is queer. She shared the news with a photo of herself wearing a tank top with the word ‘Queer’ on it – a reveal that surprised no one, she joked.

She encouraged the young children, saying, ‘Be proud of yourselves, and I’m proud of who I am too!’ She then jokingly added that she looked forward to facing new challenges and potential prejudice.’

The former Disney Channel star was hesitant to publicly share that she is queer before she did so.

She revealed to Gay Times in May 2021 that she’d subtly alluded to her sexuality for years, but was hesitant to be direct. She explained that a lyric video she released last year for her song ‘We Belong’ featured animated drawings of couples falling in love, but specifically showed only a man and a woman, which felt strange to her.

After the song was released, many people interpreted it as a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, and I suddenly felt accused of ‘queerbaiting’ – misleading fans about my identity. I addressed this on Instagram Live, explaining that while I hadn’t explicitly said it before, I identify as queer and want my music to reflect who I truly am.

The “Heart Attack” singer came out as nonbinary in a 2021 Instagram post.

She shared that each new day is a fresh chance to become the person you aspire to be. She reflected on how she’s grown up with the public watching, experiencing both the highs and lows of her life. She also noted that she felt like she was living not just for herself, but also for her fans and those watching her journey.

I’m excited to share an important part of my journey with you all. I’m identifying as non-binary and will be using they/them pronouns going forward. This decision comes after a lot of personal growth and self-discovery. I’m still learning about myself, and I don’t pretend to have all the answers. Sharing this feels very personal and makes me feel vulnerable, but I wanted you to know.

Although she’s been with singer Hayley Kiyoko since 2018, it took four years before she publicly shared that they were a couple. While it felt strange at first to have her relationship out in the open, she realized how much of a positive effect it had to be honest about who she is.

She explained that the impact of her story extended far beyond her own relationship and feelings. Knowing it helped others feel comfortable and confident in their own love lives was more important than any personal fear she faced. Reading supportive comments and realizing the power of simply loving and sharing that love with others was incredibly humbling, she told TopMob News in June 2022.

When Troye was 18, three years after telling his family he was gay, he shared his story with the world in a YouTube video. He later explained that this decision happened at a really important time in his life.

He explained to People magazine in February 2022 that as he was finalizing his record deal, he was determined to control his own public image. He didn’t want anyone else dictating how he came out. He wanted the freedom to explore the gay scene, meet people, and write honest, heartfelt songs about love.

Chrishell Stause, who is married to musician G Flip, emphasizes the need to make self-care a priority.

Chrishell, who started dating the Australian singer in 2022, explained to TopMob News that someone who genuinely loves you will prioritize your happiness, even if it means going against their own beliefs. She emphasized the importance of staying true to yourself and living life on your own terms, saying, ‘You only get one life, so make it your own.’

This TikTok creator, who is openly gay and attended an all-boys school, uses his account to inspire others to embrace their true selves.

Chris explained to TopMob News in October 2022 that his identity is likely to be a topic of discussion, depending on who he’s talking to. He sees using his platform as a way to challenge those preconceptions and make his identity seem more ordinary.
