While a release date for the 26th James Bond film hasn’t been announced yet, progress is being made. Amazon MGM Studios has started the search for the next 007, a process expected to be lengthy and competitive with many actors auditioning. Writer Steven Knight has revealed plans for a fresh take on Bond’s origins, suggesting the script will focus on reinventing the character. Details about the plot are still under wraps, but these developments are positive signs for Amazon’s planned reboot.
Look, as a lifelong Bond fan, I think it’s obvious the franchise needs to keep evolving if it wants to stay relevant after all these years. Each new Bond needs to feel fresh and different from what we’ve seen before. So, I wouldn’t be shocked if the next film, Bond 26, really breaks from the Daniel Craig era. And honestly? That’s a good thing. Craig’s Bond made a big mistake trying to tell one long, connected story. The new Amazon films need to avoid that. Let’s get back to self-contained adventures, please!
Daniel Craig’s James Bond Continuity Was a Mixed Bag

For years, James Bond movies weren’t known for having strong connections between films. Each movie generally stood on its own, focusing on Bond himself rather than a continuing story (similar to the first three Indiana Jones films). However, that changed with Daniel Craig’s portrayal of Bond. While Casino Royale introduced a new beginning for the character, Quantum of Solace broke the mold by directly continuing the story from the previous film and developing existing plotlines. This set the stage for a more connected series of films. Skyfall was largely a standalone film marking Bond’s 50th anniversary, but Spectre and No Time to Die built upon the storylines established in earlier Craig films, creating a more ongoing narrative.
The idea of deeply exploring James Bond’s character arc throughout the Daniel Craig films was initially promising and fresh. It offered a chance to see Bond grow from a new agent into a selfless hero, something the Bond series hadn’t fully done before. However, this concept didn’t quite work in practice. The connections between the films felt artificial and strained. For example, Spectre attempted to portray Blofeld as the mastermind behind everything that happened in the previous movies, but this retcon didn’t feel believable or well-integrated into the overall story.
The biggest problem with making Blofeld Bond’s adoptive brother isn’t just the family connection, it’s how it changes the story we already know. Specifically, it creates confusion around the villain in Skyfall. That film clearly establishes Silva as a former MI6 agent with a personal, deeply rooted hatred for M. There’s absolutely nothing to suggest he was working for a larger criminal organization. This new connection diminishes what made Silva a great character – in Skyfall, he was a reflection of the path Bond could have taken. Spectre’s reveal that he was just another Spectre agent feels forced and lacks impact.
Released in 2015, Spectre came at a time when the Marvel Cinematic Universe was incredibly popular and shared universes were a Hollywood trend. Eon Productions hoped Spectre would capitalize on this craze, but it ultimately felt like a superficial attempt to mimic Marvel’s interconnected storytelling. The film’s lukewarm reception – a 63% score from Rotten Tomatoes critics and 62% from audiences – suggests this approach didn’t resonate, and the James Bond series would likely benefit from moving away from ongoing, serialized narratives.
Standalone James Bond Movies Give Directors More Freedom

It’s worth remembering that the way the Craig films built their story over time wasn’t the original idea. A legal issue over the rights to the Spectre organization and its characters prevented Eon Productions from using them until 2013. Had they had those rights from the start, Spectre likely would have been integrated into the Bond films more smoothly and effectively. Once the issue was resolved, the filmmakers felt obligated to include Spectre – a key part of the James Bond universe – and it felt forced, much like how Palpatine’s return was handled in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Starting with a clear plan could help things run more efficiently, but it might be better to go back to making James Bond films as individual adventures. This would give directors more freedom to be creative and have fun with the character and world without needing to connect to a larger story. When films are part of a series, there’s a lot of pressure to maintain a consistent tone, story, and style, which can limit a director’s ability to truly make the film their own.
Denis Villeneuve is currently signed on to direct only one James Bond film. While he could continue with the series, after finishing the Dune trilogy and Bond 26, he’ll likely want to step back and let another director take over. If Amazon wants to truly reinvent James Bond, bringing in a director with a very different style from Villeneuve would be ideal. This wouldn’t be a complete overhaul of the franchise, but the new director should be given the freedom to put their own creative stamp on Bond. The best approach would be to allow them to make a classic, self-contained James Bond film – a standalone story that doesn’t require a lot of setup or continuation.
Early Mission: Impossible films were known for letting different directors bring their own style to each movie, before Christopher McQuarrie took over for the last four installments. Each of the first five films—like John Woo’s flashy Mission: Impossible II and Brad Bird’s action-packed Ghost Protocol—felt distinct, while still maintaining a core Mission: Impossible feel. If Amazon’s upcoming James Bond reboot follows this approach, it could be a big hit, allowing for a series of films that showcase the versatility of the 007 character.
