The Predator movies are popular on streaming right now, but it’s not one of the well-known installments. Surprisingly, the 2018 Predator film, which received mostly negative reviews and didn’t do well in theaters, is currently seeing a lot of viewers online.
The 2018 film The Predator is quickly becoming a hit on Tubi, landing as the platform’s fifth most-watched movie just days after its release. Surprisingly, it’s currently outperforming well-known franchises like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.
The Predator is the Worst Film in the Franchise
After a rocky start in 2018, The Predator is now finding success on streaming services. The film, directed by Shane Black – who also appeared in the original 1987 Predator – was intended to revitalize the series, but unfortunately, it initially had the opposite effect.
The film received harsh reviews from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a low 5.3/10 rating from IMDb users. Many fans were confused by the film’s creative decisions, including its insensitive portrayal of people with disabilities and its unclear connection between autism and the Predator’s hunting behavior. As a result, the film performed poorly at the box office, earning only $160 million and failing to recoup its costs.
What’s Next for the Predator Franchise?
After a disappointing attempt to restart the series, Dan Trachtenberg successfully revitalized the Predator franchise in 2022 with Prey. This Hulu film returned to the core concept of the original—a realistic struggle between humans and a terrifying creature. Trachtenberg has since continued the series’ success with two more installments: Predator: Killer of Killers and Predator: Badlands.
After directing three successful movies, Trachtenberg now has creative freedom with the Predator series. He’s hinted at several possibilities for future installments, including a sequel to Predator: Badlands and a larger crossover story that could bring back famous characters like Dutch, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Mike Harrigan, played by Danny Glover.
Although 20th Century Fox and Disney haven’t officially revealed their plans for future Predator movies, fans are confident the next installment will be a significant improvement over the 2018 film, The Predator.
