The popular Mobile Suit Gundam franchise is experiencing a surge in popularity, especially with the recent North American release of Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe. A recent announcement revealed several new projects, including a remastered version of the original series and a continuation of the Gundam Wing storyline, making it an exciting time for fans. Beyond the anime, new Gundam manga are also being published consistently, with a particularly unique title planned for release this summer.
A new Gundam story, titled Gundam: Tobacco Smoke Is Not Affected by Minovsky, is coming to Gundam Ace magazine. This series acts as a prequel to the anime film Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative. Created by Kozo Omori – a veteran of the Gundam franchise with previous work on series like Gundam Unicorn and Mobile Suit Gundam 00 – the story will begin appearing in Japan on June 26th, with the full series launching the following month. You can see the first poster for this new Gundam series below.

Gundam’s Bizarre Adventure

I’m a huge Gundam fan, and it’s amazing how much the franchise is blowing up! But you know what’s even cooler? There’s a ton of incredible stories in the novels and manga that haven’t been turned into anime yet. Take Gundam Ace, for example – they’re constantly releasing awesome ongoing and limited series that really dig deep into the Gundam universe and create totally new adventures. It’s a shame most of this stuff hasn’t made its way over to the West, but with how popular Gundam is becoming, I’m really hoping we’ll get to see more of these stories someday!
As we’ve discussed, there are many Gundam anime projects happening, but one in particular is still largely unknown. The Gundam Wing project hasn’t shared many details, leaving fans who’ve been waiting for years wondering if Heero Yuy will make a comeback. The Gundam franchise has recently had great success with revisiting popular storylines, as Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom has become the most popular anime film in the series.
I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about a potential return for Gundam Wing, and it seems like many fans are hoping they’ll adapt the New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Frozen Teardrop novels. This novel series continues the story of Heero Yuy, and it takes a really interesting turn – he’s essentially been frozen and wakes up in a world that’s aged considerably while he hasn’t. While nothing is official yet, this storyline feels like a great way to bring Gundam Wing back after all these years and give fans a worthy sequel.
