Alice and Steve’s Nicola Walker says it’s “nice to bring the chaos” to new comedy-drama

Fans of Nicola Walker are anticipating a lively and unpredictable performance from the acclaimed actress in her new comedy-drama, Alice and Steve.

The show centers around Alice (Walker) and a difficult situation: her best friend, Steve (Jemaine Clement), unexpectedly begins a relationship with her daughter, Izzy (Yali Topol Margalith), who is decades younger.

The news immediately creates a huge divide between them, and Alice becomes determined to break them up, surprisingly enjoying the process. This is a noticeable shift for Walker, who is usually known for more dramatic performances.

Walker enjoys playing a character who causes trouble, explaining in an interview with TopMob that she likes portraying her character’s over-the-top revenge plots.

I’ve often played characters in very intense situations, but this role feels incredibly realistic to me. I connect with how Sophie Goodhart, the show’s creator, writes – it really feels like something I’ve experienced in life.

People often act in surprising and dramatic ways when they’re going through intense emotions. That’s why I find these characters so believable and relatable – it’s easy to understand and connect with their actions.

The actress, who’s well-known from shows like Unforgotten, The Split, and Spooks, playfully accepted being called the ‘chaos-bringer’ for this more lighthearted role, even suggesting it could be her new middle name or superhero identity (watch the video above).

Goodhart explained to TopMob why casting Walker alongside Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords was a perfect fit for the characters Alice and Steve.

It was fun to see Nicola, who usually acts in dramas, try her hand at comedy, and Jemaine, who’s a comedian, take on a more serious acting role.

I found that really fascinating. They’re taking on somewhat different roles than usual, but they still work incredibly well as a team.

Goodhart also noted that the actors bring a really new energy to the show. He explained that if they’d gone with predictable casting choices, the show wouldn’t be as immediately captivating.

Alice and Steve is available on Disney+ from Monday 8 June 2026.
