Star Wars Fans Want 1 Dead Character Back (& It’s Making a Cancelled Movie Hurt More)

Star Wars is known for its epic battles between good and evil, and unfortunately, that often means characters die. Nearly every film and TV show in the franchise has featured a significant character’s death, leading to many heartbreaking moments for fans. While some deaths are more impactful than others and fans often wish they hadn’t happened, one loss in particular continues to be a source of pain, especially knowing a movie that could have addressed it was ultimately cancelled.

On X (formerly Twitter), a Star Wars fan named natalia asked others which character’s death they would most like to prevent. While many fans chose Padmé or Qui-Gon, some also mentioned Ben Solo. Here’s a look at some of the replies:

Disney Scrapped Plans to Have Ben Solo Return

Many Star Wars fans are aware that a sequel involving Ben Solo was planned after his death in The Rise of Skywalker. A complete script, titled The Hunt for Ben Solo and intended to be directed by Steven Soderbergh, received strong support from Lucasfilm. However, Disney unexpectedly rejected the project, marking the first time they’d turned down a fully written Star Wars movie. Following this decision, fans began a campaign to try and bring The Hunt for Ben Solo back to life.

With a new CEO at Disney (Josh D’Amaro), fans wondered if the project The Hunt for Ben Solo might finally move forward. However, director Steven Soderbergh has confirmed the project is completely cancelled. Despite continued interest in seeing Ben Solo return, Soderbergh is now focusing on other work. This is disappointing news, as Adam Driver’s portrayal of Kylo Ren/Ben Solo was a standout part of the sequel trilogy. He created a captivating and nuanced character, and many viewers would have welcomed the chance to see Driver explore Ben Solo’s story further, especially since the character didn’t get much screen time after turning away from the dark side in The Rise of Skywalker.

Given Star Wars’ history of bringing characters back from the dead – remember Palpatine’s return? – Disney’s cancellation of The Hunt for Ben Solo seemed strange. Lucasfilm has often struggled to get new Star Wars films made, so it’s surprising they wouldn’t approve a project from an acclaimed director like Steven Soderbergh. He’s known for making successful, popular movies, such as Ocean’s Eleven, and while a Star Wars film would have been a bigger project for him, his unique style could have brought a fresh and exciting feel to the franchise – something Star Wars really needs at the moment.

Unless a future Star Wars film features flashbacks or visions, it appears Adam Driver’s portrayal of Ben Solo is finished. While another director could theoretically create a story searching for Ben Solo, the main appeal of that idea rested on director Steven Soderbergh being involved. Without Soderbergh at the helm, it’s likely this story will never be made.
