Amazon Game Studios has issued a statement to address the confusion caused by this story. (Updated June 4th, 2026, 4:45 PM)
Here’s what the company told VGC:
Amazon MGM now owns the rights to develop future James Bond video games, but it’s too soon to talk about specific plans. We enjoy a strong working relationship with IO Interactive and are pleased with our collaboration on 007 First Light. IO Interactive will be sharing more details about the game soon, and we’re excited to announce what comes next.
Funnily enough, this statement doesn’t really get to the heart of what people are confused about.
From what I gather, the only change is that Amazon will be the publisher for future James Bond games, while IO Interactive will still be developing them.
I think, given the huge success of 007 First Light, any other arrangement would be absurd.
I’ll attempt to get further clarification and update the story if I hear back.
007 First Light has proven to be a big hit! The James Bond origin story from IO Interactive has received excellent reviews and is selling very well.
It’s noteworthy that the game’s release coincides with a change in ownership of the James Bond (007) license, which has now moved to Amazon. They appear eager to handle publishing for any future 007 games.
Jeff Gattis, Amazon’s head of gaming, recently told Polygon what the company’s plans are now that it owns the rights to James Bond.
He explained that Amazon didn’t completely own the rights to the initial James Bond game, First Light, but future installments will be developed by MGM, and potentially also by Amazon Game Studios.
IO Interactive will likely remain the developer of their games, but Amazon will now handle publishing them. IO Interactive previously published their game, 007 First Light, themselves.
We weren’t the original creators of First Light,” explains Gattis. “We do own the intellectual property now, but we acquired it after the initial deal for First Light IO was completed.
Everyone hopes Amazon will let IO Interactive continue developing their unique vision for James Bond games without interference.
First Light successfully launches a fresh storyline for the character, and it’s a great start. The creators at IO likely have a clear vision for how to expand on this story and what’s next for players in future games.
The developer will likely be discussing future plans and potential new games with Amazon, and they can approach those talks with strong confidence, considering how important they were to the success of First Light.
Hopefully Amazon won’t interfere with this. I think things will be fine if Amazon understands and respects what IO is creating, and lets them continue working independently.
