Recently, the Switch 2 has been selling over ten times as many units as the PS5 in Japan. This surge in purchases is likely due to customers trying to buy the console before Nintendo increases its price.
Hey everyone, just a heads-up for those who haven’t seen it: the Japanese price for the new Switch 2 just got announced, and it’s ¥59,980 – that’s about $375. It’s actually more expensive than the standard PlayStation 5 over there, which costs around $344 (¥55,000). Kinda surprised by that price difference, honestly!
Recently, the Nintendo Switch has been selling incredibly well, with sales exceeding 200,000 units several times. However, now that the price has increased, the cost difference between the Switch 2 and the PlayStation 5 is much smaller.
Sales data from Famitsu shows the Switch 2 sold 31,000 units last week, while the PS5 sold 8,000. While the Switch 2 still outsold the PS5 by a significant margin, the difference wasn’t as large as in previous weeks.
The Japanese gaming market is very distinct, and Pokémon and games like Tomodachi Life remain incredibly popular there. However, Sony could find some success with the PS5 if they can keep its price lower than Nintendo’s console.
It will be especially noteworthy to see how well the Switch 2 performs, considering its strong existing popularity in Japan. Nintendo is currently facing challenges, as they’re trying to expand the console’s market share while dealing with significantly increased costs for the parts needed to make it.
I also want to mention that 007: First Light performed really well on PlayStation 5. In fact, it was only outsold by Tomodachi Life at retail, which is a great achievement for the action game developed by IOI.
