The success of horror films like Obsession and Backrooms is shaking up the movie industry. These films prove that low-budget scary movies can compete with—and even outperform—big-budget blockbusters. What makes them different? They were created by Kane Parsons and Curry Barker, two former YouTubers who chose to work with smaller budgets and a passion for horror. And they aren’t the only ones! More directors are emerging with exciting, potentially groundbreaking horror stories, and the future looks thrillingly spooky.
5.) Goblin

Release Date: TBD
Inde Navarrette’s incredible performance in Obsession was a major reason for the film’s success with both critics and audiences. She brilliantly portrayed a range of intense emotions as the character Nikki. It seems Navarrette is continuing to focus on horror films, despite likely receiving many offers from Hollywood. She’s currently expected to star in A24’s Goblin, which promises to rely on practical effects to create its monster. Even if she doesn’t end up in the cast, Goblin is planned as a lower-budget horror film emphasizing practical effects to tell its story.
4.) Ice Cream Man

Release Date: August 7th
Eli Roth’s new, low-budget horror film, Ice Cream Man, promises to be even more graphic than his previous works like Backrooms and Obsession. The movie, releasing in August, aims for the same level of shocking horror as Terrifier‘s Art the Clown. It’s a completely new story and shouldn’t be confused with the comic book or 1995 film of the same name. The plot centers around a strange ice cream vendor who is driving children to commit terrible acts. A recent trailer showed just how intensely gory the film will be, proving it’s packing a lot of macabre horror despite its limited budget.
3.) Anything But Ghosts

Release Date: TBD
The horror film Obsession was created by Curry Barker, a former YouTuber, with a budget of $750,000. It went on to earn over $110 million domestically. While Barker is currently working on a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, he first plans to release Anything But Ghosts, a film that explores the world of paranormal investigators encountering genuine supernatural events. This new movie is particularly exciting for fans of Obsession because it’s set in the same universe and will even include a hidden clue about what happened to the original characters after the end of Obsession.
2.) Evil Dead Burn

Release Date: July 10th
The Evil Dead series is continuing without Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams, but with him and Sam Raimi still producing. New sequels are being made with different directors each time, allowing them to create their own stories within the Evil Dead world. The next installment, Burn, will follow a family coping with the loss of their son and the terrifying consequences of the Necronomicon in their home. Interestingly, fans won’t have to wait long for more scares, as another, smaller-budget Evil Dead film, Evil Dead Wrath, is planned for 2027.
1.) Teenage Sex And Death at Camp Miasma

Release Date: August 7th
Jane Schoenbrun, the filmmaker behind I Saw The TV Glow, is back with a new horror film called Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. Made on a smaller budget, the movie promises a unique and unsettling take on the slasher genre. Like their previous work, it’s expected to be a captivating and visually striking experience, exploring themes of nostalgia in a way that’s been compared to the eerie, infinite spaces of the Backrooms.
