Fathom Entertainment partnered with Glitch Productions to achieve something remarkable: bringing the popular web series The Amazing Digital Circus to movie theaters. Since its 2023 debut, the animated series has become a massive hit on YouTube, attracting tens of millions of viewers. The theatrical release, The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act, quickly became a surprise success, earning significant revenue and even surpassing a leading horror film at the box office.
The finale of The Amazing Digital Circus, titled The Last Act, is expected to earn more at the box office than Backrooms when it premieres on Thursday, June 4th. Early estimates suggest The Amazing Digital Circus will bring in around $6.8 million, playing in over 2,200 theaters globally. This surpasses Backrooms‘ opening night total of $5.9 million. While Backrooms was the top movie during its opening weekend, beating films like The Mandalorian and Grogu and Obsession, The Amazing Digital Circus is currently projected to earn between $9 and $10 million USD over its opening weekend, though these figures are subject to change.
The Amazing Digital Controversy
Despite a rocky start, The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act is performing well in theaters. The series finale faced initial challenges, including a ban in the Middle East and an online leak. It also received some criticism from fans. Luckily, the final installment will still be available for free on YouTube, though viewers outside of theaters will have to wait two weeks to watch it.
After facing criticism, Kevin Lerdwichagul, co-creator of the series, explained the two-week delay in releasing the final episode online. He believes this event could significantly impact the animation industry, potentially paving the way for independent animated series to be shown in theaters worldwide. He emphasized that achieving this has been a major challenge, but success would benefit many creators and the future of original storytelling. Despite the recent issues, fans continue to attend theatrical screenings of The Last Act to see the final episode, as evidenced by its strong opening night performance.
