XBOX CEO Wants to Make it the “Number One Gaming and Entertainment Company”

In a recent Bloomberg Tech interview (reported by VideoGamesChronicle), Xbox CEO Asha Sharma reiterated the company’s standing as the second-largest gaming publisher. She also shared her ambitious goal to make Xbox the leading gaming and entertainment company by 2030, stating that achieving this has been her primary focus since becoming CEO.

When questioned about the feasibility of this goal, given Xbox’s relatively low revenue compared to other parts of Microsoft, Sharma explained that the focus isn’t on hitting a specific profit margin. The primary aim is to establish Xbox as a dominant force in the gaming industry.

Even though XBOX has already spent a lot on recent improvements, they plan to keep investing to become a leading global gaming and entertainment company.

Look, I’m not focused on just hitting certain profit margins. It’s not about being another boring software company. My goal, and what everyone at Xbox is working towards, is to be the absolute best in gaming and entertainment. And we’re going for it! Think about how much Microsoft has put into gaming lately – we’ve acquired huge studios like Activision and Zenimax, we’re constantly improving Xbox itself, and we’re even willing to take a hit on things like memory and storage to make sure players have the best experience. We’re investing big, even if it means short-term losses, because we believe in the future of gaming.

We’re very optimistic about gaming, especially Xbox, and plan to continue investing in it. However, we need to improve our current performance, as the numbers show we’re not where we need to be. Our focus for the next 100 days will be on restructuring the business to get back on track.

Sharma explained that Microsoft’s investment in Activision Blizzard has been worthwhile, pointing to the value of owning popular game franchises like Call of Duty, Candy Crush, and World of Warcraft. She highlighted that Call of Duty actually generates more revenue than the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

She explained that everyone in the entertainment industry would want to have access to Activision Blizzard King’s properties. She pointed out that Call of Duty now makes more money than the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Candy Crush is one of the world’s most popular apps, and World of Warcraft remains a huge success. She also highlighted the company’s consistent ability to deliver popular games year after year, stating, “I love Activision Blizzard King.”

This acquisition happened before ChatGPT existed, and when our main focus was on building our console. It was also during the height of the Covid pandemic, which makes it difficult to evaluate the original decision. However, we believe these are valuable resources and we plan to keep investing in them.

At the end of the conversation, Sharma was asked how she would define success after four years leading XBOX. She replied that her goal was for XBOX to become the top gaming and entertainment company.
