When Disney+ launched, it gave Lucasfilm a chance to create more Star Wars stories and explore the galaxy in new ways. They quickly started using this opportunity, even turning planned movies into TV shows. One of these was The Book of Boba Fett, which followed the famous bounty hunter as he tried to become a powerful figure in the criminal world. Boba Fett has been a fan favorite for years, so a show about him seemed like a good idea. However, The Book of Boba Fett received mixed reactions and a second season hasn’t been announced. Recently, though, there’s been some positive news about Boba Fett’s future on screen.
Star Wars actor Jonny Coyne, who plays Janu Coin, recently shared at Fan Expo Philadelphia (as reported by Screen Rant) how his role in the franchise changed. He explained that he was initially told he’d appear in Season 4 of The Mandalorian, and possibly an episode of Boba Fett, but those plans were ultimately canceled and replaced with a movie opportunity.
Could Boba Fett Return In a Future Star Wars Project?

Recent comments from Coyne suggest Lucasfilm initially planned a second season of The Book of Boba Fett. While discussions didn’t advance as far as they did with The Mandalorian – Jon Favreau had already written a fourth season of The Mandalorian intended to lead into Ahsoka Season 2, making a character like the Imperial warlord Coin logical – Lucasfilm shifted its focus to a feature film. This change led to Coin becoming a key villain in this summer’s The Mandalorian and Grogu.
While The Book of Boba Fett tells a complete story on its own, the ending hinted at future adventures (like the scene after the credits showing Cobb Vanth is still alive). Now that Boba Fett is the leader of Tatooine, a second season could have shown him dealing with new problems and protecting the people of Mos Espa, possibly with help from Vanth. Unfortunately, that seems unlikely now because Disney is changing how it releases shows after the initial surge in popularity of streaming services.
Lucasfilm will still create shows for Disney+ like Maul – Shadow Lord and Ahsoka, but they’re now focusing more on making movies. Currently, only a second season of Ahsoka is planned for TV, while several films are in the works. Although a Boba Fett movie is possible, Disney hasn’t had much luck turning streaming shows into successful theatrical releases, as seen with the disappointing opening of The Mandalorian and Grogu. Lucasfilm would likely be better off developing completely new stories for the big screen (Star Wars: Starfighter) or continuing existing movie storylines, such as the planned New Jedi Order film featuring Rey.
It’s exciting to think about what’s next for Boba Fett. While there are still stories to tell during the time of the New Republic, Lucasfilm is currently prioritizing the conflict with Grand Admiral Thrawn in the Ahsoka series. It could be challenging to naturally fit Boba Fett into that storyline, given his lack of connection to the New Republic and his own issues on Tatooine. For now, The Book of Boba Fett may be his last appearance in live-action, but his story could definitely continue in other formats like comics or novels.
