Despite being the sixtieth installment, the 2026 film Scary Movie is often referred to as Scary Movie 6. The filmmakers, including the Wayans family and their comedic team, are playfully poking fun at Hollywood’s current trend of reviving old franchises. Instead of simply redoing classic horror scenes with a comedic spin, they’re satirizing the whole ‘requel’ phenomenon – the practice of revisiting familiar titles and ideas.
Okay, so after watching Scary Movie 6, I can confidently say it’s not the worst in the series – which honestly isn’t saying much! But where does it actually land? I’ve put together my ranking of all the Scary Movie films, and I’m curious to see if you agree with where I placed this one.
6. Scary Movie 5

Released in 2013, Scary Movie 5 felt like a desperate attempt to keep a fading franchise alive. The original cast had moved on, replaced by a mix of up-and-coming actresses like Ashley Tisdale and Katrina Bowden alongside veteran stars such as Jerry O’Connell, Heather Locklear, Katt Williams, and Terry Crews. The film also featured cameos from rappers Snoop Dogg and Mac Miller, creating a chaotic combination. Despite being directed by Malcolm D. Lee (known for Girls Trip and Undercover Brother), the movie was a critical and commercial failure, earning only $78 million worldwide on a $20 million budget.
5. Scary Movie 4

Just below Scary Movie 5 in the rankings is Scary Movie 4. Directed by comedy veteran David Zucker (Airplane!, The Naked Gun), it didn’t quite live up to his previous work. It’s important to remember that the horror genre was changing a lot in the mid-2000s – Japanese ghost stories like The Ring and The Grudge were popular, alongside intensely violent films like Saw and Hostel, and big-budget monster movies were trying to make a comeback (King Kong, War of the Worlds). This made the Scary Movie parodies feel less focused, and Zucker’s style of silly, family-friendly humor and visual gags started to feel stale.
4. Scary Movie 2

Surprisingly, the creators only planned for one Scary Movie. But after the first film earned $278 million despite costing only $19 million to make – and became a huge cultural hit – the studio quickly demanded a sequel. Scary Movie 2 came out just a year later, but it felt rushed and didn’t live up to the original. The writing, acting, and direction weren’t as strong, and the pressure to make the sequel bigger and bolder led to some very crude humor. Even so, a Scary Movie made by the Wayans family is still the best in the series, but the second film was a letdown.
3. Scary Movie 3

After the Wayans family moved on from the Scary Movie series, many people assumed the franchise was over. But the studio took a big risk, bringing in David Zucker – known for the Naked Gun movies – to change the comedic style from raunchy and R-rated to more family-friendly slapstick. Zucker also cast Leslie Nielsen, his star from the Naked Gun, alongside returning actors Anna Faris and Regina Hall. The movie also featured a strong supporting cast, including established and rising stars like Kevin Hart, Anthony Anderson, Denise Richards, Charlie Sheen, Eddie Griffin, and Queen Latifah.
Though the term ‘requel’ wasn’t common yet, Scary Movie 3 successfully revitalized the series by appealing to a broader audience and offering genuinely funny moments with experienced comedic actors. It remains the second highest-grossing film in the Scary Movie franchise and is a surprising success story, having exceeded expectations.
2. Scary Movie 6

After a 25-year break since Scary Movie 2, the Wayans family is back, and the Scary Movie franchise returns to theaters after 13 years. A lot has changed in the world – and in comedy – but the Wayans still deliver their signature brand of outrageous humor and spot-on parodies. Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Shawn Wayans, and Marlon Wayans seamlessly reunite with the cast, alongside a host of new faces and famous guest stars.
The Wayans family has always been great at poking fun at horror movies, current events, and pretty much everything else. They don’t hold back, and it’s refreshing to see that kind of humor back in theaters. Scary Movie 6 shows what the Wayans are capable of when given the time to really develop a funny sequel.
1. Scary Movie

David Zucker pioneered parody films, but the Wayans family brought the genre to a wider audience with their 2000 hit, Scary Movie. This film was the result of the Wayans’ experience making funny send-ups of different movie types, including Blaxploitation films like I’m Gonna Get You Sucka and comedies mocking 1990s “hood” movies such as Juice, Boyz n the Hood, and Menace II Society. Scary Movie was their biggest attempt at mainstream comedy yet, playfully poking fun at popular horror films from the late 90s. They didn’t hold back, delivering a truly outrageous and hilarious movie experience.
Despite facing skepticism, the film Scary Movie quickly became a massive hit with audiences, earning $278 million worldwide on a modest $19 million budget. It not only launched the careers of comedic stars like Anna Faris and Regina Hall, and boosted the Wayans family’s success, but also inspired a wave of parody films in Hollywood for years to come. Scary Movie isn’t just the best in the series—it’s a defining film for its generation.
