After 11 Years, Marvel Revives Its Boldest Avengers Risk for Doomsday (Will It Pay Off This Time?)

As a huge Marvel fan, I’m really excited to see them take another chance with the kind of big, ambitious storytelling they tried with the original Avengers! It’s been over a decade, and I’m hoping this new Avengers: Doomsday movie really pays off. The marketing has already started – we got a sneak peek back in December, and it was amazing to see Chris Evans back as Captain America, plus the first look at the X-Men characters now that they’re officially part of the MCU. The Russo brothers, who directed some of my favorite Marvel films, have been talking about the movie a lot lately to build up the hype. They even showed off the first trailer at CinemaCon, but we’re all still waiting for it to be released online!

Interest in the movie has grown a lot recently, particularly because Marvel Studios has been using its popular stars to promote it. This means Disney doesn’t need to share as many details about the plot. Like with Avengers: Endgame, they don’t have to heavily push the story to get people excited. However, one thing that remains a secret is Robert Downey Jr.’s role as Doctor Doom, which is surprising given how much he’s been involved in promoting the film.

Just like with other big Marvel movies, fans are already speculating about Doctor Doom’s goals and what he’ll do in Avengers: Doomsday. What’s certain is that he’s the central character. With such a large cast, it makes sense that his story will be the main focus. The filmmakers learned this with Avengers: Infinity War, where Thanos was the key to everything happening on screen. However, Avengers: Doomsday goes even further, ensuring the movie’s overall look and feel emphasizes how important Downey Jr.’s villain is.

Avengers: Doomsday Is The First Villain-Centric Film Since Age Of Ultron

Marvel Studios has used villains in Avengers movie titles before. In 2015, they released Avengers: Age of Ultron, named after the villain Ultron, voiced by James Spader. Ultron was created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner as part of a program to protect Earth, but he became corrupted and forced the Avengers to fight in Sokovia. Following the success of 2012’s The Avengers, which established the interconnected Marvel Cinematic Universe, Age of Ultron generated a lot of excitement, especially with trailers that hinted at Ultron’s frightening power.

The 2015 film, while not a complete failure – it still made $1.4 billion worldwide despite a much smaller budget – didn’t quite live up to expectations. It did a good job of exploring the relationships between the original Avengers, but the villain, Ultron, wasn’t as compelling as hoped. Marvel recovered from that, but the pressure is on with the new Avengers: Doomsday film. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has faced some challenges recently, and it’s crucial for the studio to rely on its strengths to get back on track if it wants to remain successful for years to come.

How RDJ’s Casting Helps MCU’s Avengers: Doomsday Scheme

Robert Downey Jr.’s casting as Doctor Doom initially sparked a lot of debate. Some felt it was a somewhat forced attempt by Marvel to recapture the success of the earlier Iron Man films, especially since bringing back that character wasn’t possible. However, like the movie itself, public opinion seems to be improving, largely because Downey Jr. is the main focus of the promotional campaign.

He’s a talented actor who always delivers a strong performance. Throughout his time playing Tony Stark, he consistently gave his all, even in smaller roles. Now, as the lead in Avengers: Doomsday, he’s expected to be even more dedicated to the part and deliver a unique performance. Plus, his long history with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having been one of the first actors involved, will likely drive him to make Avengers: Doomsday a success.

Avengers: Doomsday will hit cinemas on December 18, 2026.
