Sometimes betrayal comes at a deadly price.
The new Oxygen series, The Killer Among Us, delves into several murders that deeply impacted close communities. Host and producer Alan Cumming says some of these true crime stories are genuinely unsettling—and understandably so.
Honestly, I just love stuff that’s a little weird, a little unexpected, you know? Something with a little…edge. That’s what really grabs me, what makes me sit up and pay attention. It’s not about what’s normal, it’s about the things that are just…different. I’m always searching for that little twist!
What’s sure to capture your interest is that the suspects are often surprisingly close to the victims – closer than you’d expect, but not immediately apparent.
The star of Traitors explained that because you know who the killer is – you’ve already seen them – and they’ll be a key part of the story, it makes viewers pay closer attention.
The series explores the lives of the victims and the profound impact of these terrible crimes on those left behind.
Honestly, hearing Alan talk about it really freaked me out. He was saying that someone you’ve worked alongside for years, someone you think you know, could suddenly turn violent. It’s genuinely scary to consider. He even warned me not to watch it right before bed, and he’s right – it’s definitely something that sticks with you!
However, there is some order in chaos, so to speak.
Now that we know the killer’s identity and that it’s someone connected to the victim, it’s strangely reassuring. It means we need to be more careful and question those we think we know – the ‘keep your enemies close’ idea – but it’s less frightening than the idea of a completely random attack.
Alan considered that the real comfort came from knowing the person who would carry out the task was right there with you, even if the suspects were still nearby or part of your close group.

Despite all of today’s technological advancements, tragic events – like the disappearance of a woman on the day she was to be married, last seen entering a Yale University building – remind us that danger still exists.
“Honestly, that’s what worries me the most,” Alan said. “I just can’t understand how this is possible. It doesn’t add up, especially considering the evidence we have. But then you figure out the reason… and I don’t want to give it away.”
Look, I know it’s just a matter of time. Seriously, I’ve been saying it for ages! Whatever’s been going on behind closed doors, whatever secrets they think they’ve hidden… it will come out. It always does. I just have this feeling, and I’m telling you, the truth will be revealed eventually. I’m so ready for it!
He told TopMob he enjoys how long secrets can be kept. What initially attracted him to the show was its surprising twists, and the opportunity to play a mysterious, somewhat serious character who ultimately reveals the true culprit. He described it as a very dramatic performance.
Don’t miss the premiere of The Killer Among Us on Oxygen, Sunday, May 17th at 7pm Eastern and Pacific time. And stick around to learn when some of your other favorite shows are coming soon!
