Dutton Ranch Episodes 1 & 2 Ending Explained: Why Rip Did THAT After The Murder In Texas

Be warned, this contains spoilers for the first two episodes of Dutton Ranch! In the opening episodes, Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler uncover a murder and hidden secrets while in South Texas. The series begins with Beth, Rip, and their son Carter arriving in Rio Paloma, where they encounter both friends and foes, including those from the competing 10-Petals Ranch.

Following a terrible fire that destroyed the Montana ranch Beth and Rip recently purchased, they hoped to find a quiet life in South Texas. But for the Dutton family, peace isn’t something you can simply seek out – Beth and Rip will have to work to achieve it. Unfortunately, their new location, Rio Paloma, quickly presents just as many challenges as Montana did.

When Wes Ayers (played by Nakoa DeCoite) is murdered by Rob-Will (Jai Courtney), the foreman of the 10-Petals, it creates a major issue for Rip. In the second episode of Dutton Ranch, titled “Earn Another Day,” Rip discovers Wes’s body on the ranch and must figure out how to handle the situation and cover it up.

Beth and Carter quickly clash with Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening), the owner of 10-Petals, and her family. These encounters, happening in the first two episodes of the Yellowstone spinoff, hint at future problems for the characters at Dutton Ranch.

Why Rip Got Rid Of Wes’ Corpse Without Beth Knowing

In the first episode of Dutton Ranch, Rip discovers Wes’s body being eaten by wild hogs. The second episode shows Rip freezing the body and then disposing of it by throwing it down a mine shaft.

Rip unknowingly made things much worse for himself when he got rid of Wes’ body. He didn’t bother to find out who it was or tell anyone – not even Beth – and just handled it alone, thinking he was solving a problem.

Rip decided not to tell Beth about the body he found on their ranch because he wanted to protect her feelings. He knows she’s having a hard time getting used to South Texas – the heat and the locals are a lot for her – and she simply wants a little peace and quiet. Rip understandably wanted to give her that.

Beth noticed Rip had slipped out of bed again, which wasn’t unusual. However, when he disappeared from the ranch entirely, she immediately became concerned and suspicious. Rip will need to explain where he was in the third episode of Dutton Ranch.

Beulah Jackson’s Ranch & Family Have Dark Secrets

The 10-Petals Ranch has a long history, dating back 190 years to before the famous battle of the Alamo, and has always been owned by the Jackson family. They’re similar to the Dutton family in Montana. Beth Jackson immediately didn’t trust the ranch’s leader, Beulah Jackson, famously describing her as someone who appeared elegant but was actually dangerous – a “gator in Gucci.”

The Jackson family, like the Duttons, is haunted by hidden secrets, and Beulah is the strong-willed force keeping everything together, much like the late Governor John Dutton in Yellowstone. These secrets and family dramas largely center around Beulah’s son, Rob-Will, and the conflicts within the family.

Rob-Will was a troubled man with a history of violence and a severe drinking problem, and the group 10-Petals had previously covered up his actions. But he crossed a line when he unexpectedly killed Wes and left the body on the Dutton Ranch, an act they couldn’t ignore.

Beulah tasked her son, Joaquin, with handling the aftermath of Rob-Will’s actions. Joaquin got Wes into rehab, but his sudden disappearance caused tension and a fight among the ranch hands at 10-Petals. Meanwhile, Chet, who saw Rob-Will kill Wes, found himself unexpectedly promoted to foreman and overwhelmed by the situation.

Things get really complicated when Wes’ wife, Whitney, played by Olivia Rose Keegan, starts to suspect something’s seriously wrong. Joaquin tries to convince her that Wes simply abandoned his family, but she doesn’t buy it for a second. And she’s not the type to be silenced with money – she heads straight to the sheriff, determined to get answers. It really ramps up the tension!

In the first episode of Dutton Ranch, Rob and Will clashed with Rip. As Rip secretly disposed of Wes’s body, the mysteries surrounding the 10-Petal cover-up will increasingly involve both Beth and Rip as the series progresses.

Dutton Ranch Introduces Its Own Walker

Rip only had one ranch hand, Azul Ramos (J.R. Villarreal), who had worked on the ranch when it was still owned by the Edwards family. Needing extra help, Rip asks Azul for a recommendation and hires someone Azul knows is skilled with horses.

Similar to how Rip hired Walker on Yellowstone, John Dutton III enlists Zachariah, a recently released convict, to work at the ranch. Zachariah used to be employed at the Edwards Ranch before an incident led to his imprisonment.

Rip drove the long distance from prison to the Dutton Ranch without asking about Zachariah’s past, figuring he’d learn what he needed to know in time. He’s also beginning to wish he’d paid more attention when Zachariah offered to teach him Spanish.

It remains to be seen if Rip will develop the same animosity towards Zachariah as he did towards Walker on Yellowstone, potentially even wanting to harm him. However, unlike John Dutton in Yellowstone, Rip doesn’t brand the ranch hands, indicating a shift in his approach.

Oreana & Carter Are Like Dutton Ranch’s Romeo & Juliet

Look, I really feel for Carter. High school is tough enough, but imagine being 19 and stuck with a bunch of sophomores because you never finished your education. That’s exactly what’s happening to him in Rio Paloma. And to make matters worse, these mean girls from Texas totally con him into buying them beer at a rodeo before he even meets Oreana – she seems like a good thing coming his way, though (Natalie Alyn Lind plays her, and she’s great!).

I was so impressed when Carter stepped in and rescued Oreana from her awful boyfriend, Hoyt – he really took care of business! It didn’t surprise me at all when Oreana returned the favor and got him out of jail. Honestly, it all makes sense when you learn she’s an Oreana Lynn Jackson – Beulah’s wild granddaughter, with Rob-Will as her dad. She clearly gets her strength from that family!

Oreana appears to have feelings for Carter, though she complicated things by telling him she’s still dating Hoyt. Carter is clearly still in love with Oreana. He even sought advice from Rip, who happily passed on some of John Dutton’s insights about relationships.

With the conflict between the Dutton Ranch and the 10-Petals heating up, Carter and Oreana are destined to be caught between their feuding families. If they fall in love, their relationship could mirror the famous story of Romeo and Juliet, but hopefully with a happier outcome in Rio Paloma.

Beth’s Beef Business Is What John Dutton Refused In Yellowstone

Rip takes care of the day-to-day work on the Dutton Ranch, while Beth manages the financial side. The ranch has a valuable herd of black Angus cattle, and Beth is planning to start a business selling high-quality beef to wholesalers.

Beth presented her business plan to her father, John Dutton, while they were in Yellowstone, but he wouldn’t agree to it, even though the ranch was deeply in debt. Later, while working at Dutton Ranch, Beth discovered that 10-Petals Ranch had taken over the slaughterhouse business in Rio Paloma.

I was so relieved when Beth connected with Everett McKinney – Ed Harris is fantastic as this local vet who really knows Rio Paloma. He helped her figure out where to get their beef processed, and now Beth is focused on finding the right buyers for all that amazing certified black angus – we’re talking ribeyes, porterhouses, the works! It’s a crucial step for the ranch.

One of the biggest shifts in Beth’s character in Dutton Ranch is her newfound love for horses. She used to dislike them in Yellowstone, but showed a change of heart when she paid a large sum of money to a veterinarian to save an injured horse instead of letting it be put down. She also demonstrated her care for horses by rescuing them from a fire in the first episode of Dutton Ranch.

Beth has successfully dealt with challenges at Dutton Ranch so far, but the secrets Rip and the 10-Petals are hiding will likely disrupt the peace that the Dutton and Wheeler families are trying to achieve.
