Disney+ is known for family-friendly Disney classics, Marvel, and Star Wars, but its sister service, Hulu, is becoming a strong source of more adult-oriented shows. Coming soon is Alice & Steve, a six-part British series from Sophie Goodhart (who has written for Sex Education and Rivals) and directed by BAFTA-winning director Tom Kingsley. The series, produced by the company behind Baby Reindeer, stars Nicola Walke and Jemaine Clement as Alice and Steve, two best friends for thirty years whose relationship takes a chaotic turn. ComicBook recently spoke with Walke and Clement about the challenges and rewards of playing these complex characters.
According to Walke, the series opens with Alice and Steve together after a funeral. They begin to act like their younger selves, indulging in old habits – including drugs they don’t usually use – as Alice reveals a hidden stash. This scene establishes the show’s core theme: a couple in middle age desperately holding onto their past as their present life crumbles, and how familiar comfort can unexpectedly drive them apart.
Alice & Steve Uses Dark Comedy to Explore Trauma

The show’s reunion of friends quickly descends into conflict when Steve reveals he’s dating Alice’s 26-year-old daughter, Izzy. This sparks a relentless and damaging battle, with Alice determined to end the relationship and Steve responding in kind. Their once-strong friendship becomes a weapon, hurting everyone around them. Both actors, Walker and Clement, acknowledge that their characters are flawed and make difficult choices.
Walker believes the characters are simply ordinary people, capable of both great selfishness and selflessness. They’ve shown that anyone is capable of such behavior under pressure. Clement adds that a shared loss is central to the conflict. The characters used to keep each other in check, acting as each other’s conscience, but with that support gone, they’ve turned on each other.
Even though the movie deals with intense themes, both actors enjoyed making Alice & Steve. Walker said she always felt fantastic at the end of each day, explaining, “I’d take off my costume and makeup and just feel great—I don’t know why, it was wonderful!” She felt like she’d released all her energy during filming. Clement was equally impressed with Walker’s performance, noting, “There are scenes where Nicola’s character causes trouble for everyone else, and you can see she’s really enjoying it. She’s incredibly powerful and dictates the atmosphere.”
The new series Alice & Steve will debut on June 8, 2026. All six episodes will be released at once on Hulu in the U.S. and on Disney+ everywhere else.
