
I’m sharing something I’ve never told anyone: I’ve never played Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. It’s a bit embarrassing to admit, especially as a games journalist, considering most people think it’s the best game in the series. I honestly don’t know much about the main character, Edward Kenway, or what all the excitement about the pirate adventures is about. I know it’s a highly praised game, but I haven’t actually experienced it for myself yet.
It’s easy to see why I feel this way. I’ve played a lot of Assassin’s Creed games, and I actually think Unity is the best one, though that’s a discussion for another time. However, I never fully connected with the series, especially with older titles like Black Flag. One of the biggest problems with the original Black Flag was the repetitive and pointless ‘tailing’ missions – even the developers admitted they weren’t great. Luckily, Black Flag Resynced seems to have fixed those missions, along with another issue I had with what’s considered the best Assassin’s Creed game.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag’s Terrible Tailing Missions Have Been Fixed

Man, I remember being so annoyed by the tailing missions in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. You know, where you had to slowly follow someone and try to listen in on their chats? That whole thing was a pretty common part of the older AC games, and Black Flag didn’t really change it up much. The problem wasn’t the idea itself, but how often they made you do them, and how they actually worked. If you got spotted while following someone, it instantly failed and you had to start the whole thing over. It was super frustrating! The enemy AI could be really random, and sometimes Edward just wouldn’t move how I wanted him to in those crowded streets, making it even harder.
Thankfully, the frustrating tailing missions in Black Flag are one of the things the Black Flag Resynced mod fixes. Even Ubisoft acknowledged how inconsistent this mechanic was in their trailer for the game’s remake. These missions were a major reason I struggled to get into Assassin’s Creed Black Flag. Knowing they were frequent and could force a restart for minor mistakes was discouraging, especially when it didn’t make sense for the character to simply fail in those situations. Resynced solves this by letting you continue fighting even if caught, which is a logical improvement and a great relief for anyone who prefers a more forgiving, old-school game experience.
The Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced mod greatly improves the game’s often-clunky melee combat, a problem that even affected my beloved Unity. The original combat system felt stiff, slow, and unrealistic, making fights drag on and feel awkward. Resynced makes combat much smoother, faster-paced, and more intricate, giving Edward a wider range of skills. While I always loved the naval battles in Black Flag, it’s great to know that when fighting on land, I won’t have to struggle with the outdated and frankly poor combat system from previous Assassin’s Creed games.

I bring all this up because despite its frustrating issues, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is widely considered excellent. People consistently praise its story, the character of Edward Kenway, and the excitement of its sea battles. I really wanted to enjoy those aspects, but the game’s age and outdated mechanics kept getting in the way. Honestly, before the announcement of Resynced, I wouldn’t have cared much about a Black Flag remake – I probably would have been indifferent.
I don’t really like how common remakes have become, especially since it feels similar to Disney and other animation studios just redoing things for profit. I’ve always thought remakes take away resources from creating original games and mostly feel like attempts to capitalize on people’s fondness for the past. It also seems too early for so many remakes, as the industry hasn’t been around long enough for them to truly make sense. However, I overlooked the fact that games don’t always hold up well over time. Game technology advances so quickly, which is amazing, but it also means games can feel outdated after just a few years.
After thirteen years of making video games, a lot has changed, especially within the Assassin’s Creed series. Ubisoft has improved as a developer, getting rid of frustrating elements and focusing on better game design. While older games still have worthwhile qualities – particularly in their ideas and creativity – they can be hard for modern players to enjoy due to outdated technology and gameplay. That’s why remakes can be valuable, and when done well – like with Black Flag Resynced, which includes features fans asked for – they can really shine.
It’s great that we’re getting a new version of Black Flag that keeps what made the original game fun while updating it for modern players. I’m optimistic that longtime fans will appreciate Ubisoft’s work on this remake, especially those who struggled with the frustrating tailing missions. It will be interesting to see how long it takes before people start asking for this version to be remade, but that’s a discussion for another day. For now, we can finally experience Edward Kenway’s adventures without the drawbacks of older game design.
